Shutdown time
Since the Fall update my computer takes ages to shut down. It still starts and restarts in the same time. I am using an SSD. Everything else is OK.
Any advice appreciated.

Have a look through this. I too noticed different behaviour with Fall edition (clean installed)
Fast Start and shutdown behaving a little oddly. Solved - Windows 10 Forums
Thank you for your reply. I will turn off fast startup and se what happens. Most of the above link seems to be for laptops, whereas mine is PC
OK :) It would still be interesting to know what you find with Fast Start turned off.
Hi,
How are you shutting down ?
Are there any open apps
It's known issue about all that has been suggested is to close all open apps before shutting down.
Personally I've always use Win+x+u+u or right click the start button and power shutdown
See if either of those do any better.
I shut down apps, then left click start, then shut down. Have turned off quick start, but it has made no difference to shut down time.
Hi,
Right click the start button and shutdown that way and see if it makes any difference.
The behaviour of Start's shut down has changed in FCU. It now uses the equivalent of the command line shutdown /sg instead of shutdown /s as previous versions did.
On restarting, registered programs that were open when you shut down will restart from where they left off. It is probably preparing for this that explains why the shut down takes a little longer now.Code:Usage: shutdown [/i | /l | /s | /sg | /r | /g | /a | /p | /h | /e | /o] [/hybrid] [/soft] [/fw] [/f] ... /s Shutdown the computer. /sg Shutdown the computer. On the next boot, restart any registered applications. /r Full shutdown and restart the computer. /g Full shutdown and restart the computer. After the system is rebooted, restart any registered applications.
Only certain apps can register to restart in this way, MS Office does, IE and Chrome do (but Edge doesn't). Try leaving IE open with a few tabs then shut down or restart to see this new 'feature' in action.
on a restart Fall Creators Update reopens apps from before
If you wish you can try this registry mod. Copy and paste in to a text file, change the extension to .reg, double click to merge into registry to speed up startup/shutdown and also speedup mouse hover/context menu. Reboot to take effect.
Code:Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 ; Speed up shutdown [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop] "AutoEndTasks"="1" "HungAppTimeout"="1000" "MenuShowDelay"="1" "WaitToKillAppTimeout"="2000" "LowLevelHooksTimeout"="1000" ;Disable hibernate [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power] "HibernateEnabled"=dword:00000000 ;Speed up right click context menu [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-19\Control Panel\Desktop] "MenuShowDelay"="1" [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20\Control Panel\Desktop] "MenuShowDelay"="1" [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse] "MouseHoverTime"="1" [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-19\Control Panel\Mouse] "MouseHoverTime"="1" [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20\Control Panel\Mouse] "MouseHoverTime"="1" 'Speedup Start Up [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon] "AutoRestartShell"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] "NoLowDiskSpaceChecks"=dword:00000001 "LinkResolveIgnoreLinkInfo"=dword:00000001 "NoResolveSearch"=dword:00000001 "NoResolveTrack"=dword:00000001 "NoInternetOpenWith"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control] "WaitToKillServiceTimeout"="1000" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer] "AlwaysUnloadDll"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Serialize] "Startupdelayinmsec"=dword:00000000
That was a good one!
For a very long time, I've only shut down my PC, from 98 to 10, with a Quick Shutdown shortcut, like this.
I've shared this Quick Shutdown with all my customers and they really like the simplicity and SPEED of the shutdown.
%windir%\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 1
This one seems to work well on OS's from 7 to 10.
My own PC, using this shortcut, shuts down in 5 sec's or less.
Cheers mate!
