Install Windows 10 on a 16 year old computer

I know there is a thread about installing Windows 10 on old hardware but it's a 155 pages one so I decided to create one specific to my hardware.

    Motherboard: Asus P5K Pro.
    CPU: Intel Core Duo 3.16GHz.

Can I install Windows 10 or should I keep Windows 7 and don't bother anymore?

Since Win7 and Win8/8.1 support was discontinued just a few months ago I'd give Win10 a try. Downside is it is no longer a free upgrade. I still have a Win7 Desktop and finally junked a WinXP Desktop.

The end is inevitable i think just put linux on it, win 10 will be slow on core 2 system where linux will be like a Ferrari on it. Win 11 no go.

The future overall for Windows looks bleak unless they clean up, its going towards the side of the divide that PC users have been fighting against for the longest time at that is Mac vs PC. PC was always better because Mac was proprietary and locked in, in many stupid ways.

Basically where Windows wants to head towards. Just replace the tractors with computers. This is already Macs in a nutshell always has been but windows as an OS is utilizing this methodology in its systems as each day goes by. We already seen that windows 11 has exodus perfectly working computers which is causing the biggest Ewaste outcome to date.

Just reading this back i already know that eventually i will not continue to support something that is anti consumer and just anti computer in general. The ramifications of what is happening now is pretty big in scope because many ppl will just throw those computers away or they collect dust in a closet. Realistically nothing wrong with many of these computers for certain tasks.

The 3 year turn around already says yeah no thanks time to move on from Microsoft the money grubber, its been fun.

look at my pc specs ,and my 10 runs just fine ,as long as you don't multitask to much lol
i was on Linux for bout 2 years and yes its much faster on this pc , but , at the end it became frustrating ...cause its just not windows ,you know ? everything is just so much easier with windows ,in my opinion (for an average user ),
but ya , win10 will run fine ,twerk it here and there and keep things to a minimum.
also putting in a SSD will work wonders.

A cheap SSD will make a great improvement. There are places to buy cheap Windows 10 keys if required. How much RA< does the PC have?

Thanks for trying to help but your statements are in deep conflict with the reality.
It works fine but then be careful of this and that.
I also looked at your laptop on Samsung for drivers and they also are NOT clear what OS are the drivers for, they just show "Windows" which doesn't make sense.
In my opinion they should be out of the computer business.
I looked on Intel website for the CPUs compatibility with Windows 10 but my CPU (and yours) is not compatible, not even with Windows 8.

And I don't understand why Gurus, Gold members, and Vip members come here with non sense and totally off topic stuff, am I asking for a faster storage drive? NOT! Am I asking to install Linux? NOT! Am I looking to buy a Windows license? NOT!
Is this how you Gurus collect your reputation on Ten Forums???

Probably but you will only find out by trying it.
Its performance with Windows 10 cannot be predicted.
When I updated an old 2005 WinXP computer to Windows 10, it ran quite well. My rough estimate was that it ran 25% slower than it had with WinXP.
I helped some people with the same model, the same hardware components & the same drivers.
    - Some of them experienced decent performance just like I did.
    - Some of them found that it was too slow for use.
    - Some of them found that Windows 10 would not even complete installation.
Mine continued to run well all the way through to Windows 10 Version 1709.
    - It failed to update to Version 1803 or any later Versions.
    - Somebody in the same boat as me [same model, ...] sought advice & tried all kinds of tricks to update it but never managed to update to any later Version.

You don't say how much RAM you have, but I'll assume it's 4GB or more. Your CPU has a higher benchmark than the Pentium B950 my System One below, and I had been happily using Windows 10 on that since it got the free upgrade from Win7 to Win10 in 2015. A couple of years back I replaced it as my main machine with something newer that would support Windows 11, but I still use it today as a backup.

I have several other older machines and in general I've found they run Windows 10 at least as well, if not better, than the ran their original windows 7.

An SSD will make an older machine run a lot faster than it ever did on its original HDD. It's well worth trying....

...Am I looking to buy a Windows license? NOT!
Actually, if you have never tried upgrading this PC from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and got it a digital licence for Windows 10, then yes you are. Microsoft turned off the free upgrade from Win7/8 to Win10 in September last year. You can still upgrade from W7 to W10, but it will not get activated with a digital licence.

it will still be slow on windows 10 because the FSB is on the motherboard still until DDR3 systems which is slow. I would say DDR2 based systems in general are slow on windows 10.

i think further along there is some sort of planned obsolescence going on underneath it all with windows and older computers although i cannot confirm this the results are night and day run any pre gen 1 system on Linux vs windows and you will see that those computers are lightning fast on Linux but slow as a snail on windows past XP.

The pattern we have seen so far is that computers usually get one or two revision of OS that they get to go on and be able to run without slow down so 90s computers can do up to XP reliably and XP computers can do up to win 7 or 8.

Try to run an old slot series on windows 10? yeah it might work but it will be dead slow. And then win 11 is clearly showing us a hard line now so this is something that has been happening for a long time. Soon it will be the 3 year turn around and the you have to get a new computer every three years with this logic.
But like normal windows fashion it will be drawn out over 20 years so that ppl are less to notice what they are doing.

    Linux is inevitable.
