Enabling only essential services on Windows 10 Home

Hi! This is my first time posting in a forum, I'm excited!

I had a problem of performance on my Laptop so I decided to disable all msconfig services, which I noticed that it left my PC basically unusable.

I came here looking if I there is any way possible to know the bare minimum essential services to run Windows 10 efficiently and smoothly with networking and all drivers working as intented and with the best performance possible.

My Windows 10 Home version is 20H2!

    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to Ten Forums @loku

Turning off services can be problematic if you're not sure what they do, as you have found.

What you can safely do to improve performance, and something I do on all my machines, is go into Settings > Privacy > Background apps and turn off 'Let apps run in the background'. I like to allow just Weather to run, so I just turn of all the others, leaving Weather as the only one allowed to run in the background.

    Hello, thanks!
I have done this as soon as I installed Windows on my machine, but the answer to my question is still unsolved and I'm sure that having all services running on startup can be problematic, more so on the performance side of things!

As a reference, I'll leave an image attached of what my services on startup look like, to help anyone that can provide a solution to this.

As you can see, the Enable All button is grey, that was my solution for being dumb and disabling everything.
Sorry for the fact that it's in Spanish, but I'm from abroad and English is not my first language!

    Hi,

    I use this.

    Windows 10 Decrapifier, 18XX/19XX/2XXX - Script Center - Spiceworks

If you want to attempt to use it, I strongly suggest. A complete backup of operating system. And take the time to read what the script do toroughly. Almost all that the script does is reversible. but not always the easy way.

There is no definitive list of services that are safe to disable. This has been asked many times and the majority advice is always to leave services alone.

Which Windows Services Can You Safely Disable?

[Request] List of services that can be safely disabled

You can find .reg files for restoring your default services in this tutorial. After that, you could try cautiously disabling one service at a time. You could start with Sysmain (aka SuperFetch) as it should have little if any impact on or interaction with any other services. The effect would be a faster response in the first five minutes or so after start up (when Sysmain would normally be running), but slightly slower at opening apps after that (Sysmain's job is to speed opening you commonly used files and apps).

You do not want to restore all services at once.
If you need to restore many services, then it would be recommended to do a repair install instead.

....Click/tap on the link under the Service Display Name column in the table below of the service that you would like to restore to download it's .reg file...

"I'm sure that having all services running on startup can be problematic, more so on the performance side of things!"

That is not true, services are just waiting in the sidelines/on standby/stopped to be used when the appropriate application is used, they do not affect performance as such.

Everyone has different hardware and applications installed so it is just about impossible for someone else to say which are your essential services.

The point of the tick boxes is for fault diagnostics.

Absolutely true... It's the "Tasks" that makes thing go awry.... Ohhhhh they stack up... One over another those not finished will restart or continue where they are and the failed one will be retried . At some point You need it to let it finnish or it will never...

...Or stop them to run. One day I booted a PE and deleted all tasks from a Win7 installation. And used it for 7 YEARS. Nothing happened... Connected to a domain GPO, certificate update, Mappings, security, everything worked !.. The windows I use at the moment is exactly the same... (can post Screenshots)

So When W10 When out I installed it. Booted a PE and did the same thing. It never restarted. loll...

But yeah. Theres a lot of "Tasks" that can be disabled... Disabling Drivers and Services... You must know what you need and doing.

The days when disabling services significantly improved performance are long gone.

You are likely to create more issues messing with them than you solve. Really all that is needed is to stop programs automatically starting from Task Manager and stop programs running in background.

All my devices idle at 1% CPU with minimal disk use.

That is without disabling any services which shows how efficient service management is these days.

The only services I turn off are third party apps checking for updates as I just do that manually.

Could you please define this, log on and about 3 mins after logging on, and without starting additional programs other than to post a screenshot, post a screenshot of your task manager ordering columns of interest high to low by clicking on the appropriate column header.
