Reply to your comment about the txt file you reviewed for issues

    Hey Paul,

Not exactly sure where to look in that txt file you referred to as to the source of the issue.
Yesterday, I updated Windows and reset sleep, hibernate and advanced power settings just prior to running that bat file you wrote and provided. This morning the computer was off when I got to it.
Lets see if the issue has resolved itself for the next few days or not. This is what I have experienced in the past. I have checked the powercfg /requests command from time to time and it would say None just like it did when I ran it yesterday.
I'm not exactly certain as to the best settings for hibernate, sleep, and turn off hard disk. Can you suggest what might be the best plan? It doesn't really matter to me. Like I said upfront, I just want the computer to eventually turn itself off after a few hours of non use.
Thank you and to everyone so far for all of your help to help me!

Perhaps the changes you made have resolved the problem. See how things are over the next few days, and if the problem returns perhaps we can have a re-think and come up with a solution!

    I hope this helps.

    FredricJLowe,
    Thanks for the update.

Do you recall what settings you changed yesterday before it started working? Now we wait to see if the problem comes back since sleep is working.

Reply to your your question Steve

    Hi Steve,

Other than updating Windows and resetting hibernating, sleep, and turn hard drive off, I don't recall anything else that I changed.

So far so good. I was away from the computer this afternoon for a few hours and when I returned, it had shut down.

I'll keep monitoring this over the next few days to keep all of you updated.

    Thank you as well Steve.

    Hi Adam,
I set the hard drive to turn off after 120 minutes whether on battery or plugged in.
I have it set to hibernate after 15 min., to sleep after 30 min.
Not sure if I should modify the settings.
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

These times seem out of order to me. I would expect the drive to turn off before the PC sleeps before it hibernates. This would be the order of saving power from the least to the most.

Perhaps I misunderstand the correct order...I thought turning off the hard drive meant turning the laptop off. Are you suggesting turning the hard drive off first, sleeping next and finally hibernating?
If so, can you please suggest times I should set each to?
    Thank you Steve.

Yes, but times would be based upon your own usage patterns and preferences. For example drive off after 20 minutes, sleep after 30, and hibernate after 60 minutes.

Thank you Steve. Just reset the order as you suggested, 20 min. drive off, 30 mi. for sleep, and 120 min. for hibernate.
I'll see how this goes and will update in a few days.
