To clarify, when I tried the external antenna, I disabled the ethernet and disabled the native wifi adapter. Haven't I isolated booth the antenna and the card this way?

I did learn here I should boot from USB and try the external antenna.

What troubleshooting steps were performed with HP support?
    Any hardware testing?

Also, another point, if you send it back to HP, they are going to replace the existing WiFi card with the exact same model that is in there now. The next troubleshooting step, in my opinion, is to boot from Linux on a USB flash drive.
    Should I use this?
Create a bootable USB stick on Windows | Ubuntu

    thank you

I have gone through a variety of troubleshooting steps, tests, diagnostics, etc both myself from tutorials and twice with HP techs on chat with remote access. Hours. Way more than I can list.

    Thanks

I do such diagnosing of hardware using a Linux Mint LiveDVD or the Bootable USB. In some testing of some other versions of Linux using the same process has shown that may be a bit more difficult getting the Wireless to work unless actually installed.

That sounds similar to the 25Mbps Wireless DSL I use, a dish aimed at an antenna on a hill.

See post #4 for testing options.

There are also tons of settings from the device manager properties for the WiFi adapter that can be changed:

I have to say that despite hours of tweaking and testing. I do not recall adjusting a single setting on that advanced properties tab.

Yes definitely done that repeatedly , thanks. Also dumped winstack/IP. Updated, rolled back, and reinstalled drivers. Update bios. Reset networks. Forget wifi routers. Updated router firmware. Windows updates. Virus scan. Tweaked some device setting about power management and IP6. Even did a power drain.

No, the antenna tower on the hill by our church is a mile away in the other direction.

NavyLCDR call my attention to a relevant point. Other nearby routers can be using same frequency / channel.
Nowadays there are so many routers on the area that an interference can occur.
    Download, extract and run WifiInfoView.
WifiInfoView scans the wireless networks in your area and displays extensive information about them.
