I don't understand (sharing files across the Win 10 network)

I hope someone, ANYONE can help.

I have 4 PCs in the Network I have. 3 main and one laptop.
For the 3 main(Rig 1, Rig 2 and Server) I am using and have an active Domain on the Win Server 16' Comp.
The Domain users (main 3) have Admin access (or should) I have a working Remote Desktop connection with Comp =Rig 1 and want to provide access to ALL functions of the Server as well as sharing files across the network. I have 3 drives shared. I have set the Admins, specific comps, Domain users, to "Full Control" but it will not allow it. I have to set "EveryOne" to full control in the Security tab of the drive for Rig 1 to have control. This should not be the case should it? I don't know what I'm missing but even when I am in the advanced Security sections but the Server will still not allow Full access/control despite it saying Rig 1 has full control.

I have read some about M$ change with build 1801 and the mishap of sharing settings but there has to be a way to do this without this much trouble

I don't know what I'm missing please advise.....

Hi, many struggle with local networking and MS has made this complicated to set up. Add to that even when correctly set up, whether one PC 'sees' another can be unpredictable after logging on- can take up to 30 mins. (possible workaround with 2 line script to turn a service off and on).

    Many threads report such problems.

Start with reviewing settings on each PC using this:
Turn On or Off File and Printer Sharing in Windows 10
    - more related tutorials follow the main text.

It took me 2 attempts first time round for just two PCs, then I experienced it being erratic. I'm hoping the fix mentioned above deals with that- it seems to have helped. But that's only relevant once the PCs are correctly configured.

    Hey

Thank you very much for the response. I have noticed that as I have scoured the Net over the last two months.

I essentially had ONE (of three) drives shared (the way I wanted) but as I stated above in the OP that it was set to "EveryOne" despite being on a DC with the PC having active remote access (and still does) as well as being an Administrator with FULL access.

Although when HomeGroup did exist, I never used it and went to the advanced sharing option as to understand the methods knowing that back then (Win HS 2011) I would eventually upgraded the OS to a newer Sever box. Now with the more update features I am not understanding what Server 16' can really do since the Sharing is as you have stated and I have experienced is unreliable despite most tuts and M$ themselves claiming the settings to use should work.

I'll have to keep searching and look on the thread you rec'd. I HOPE to solve this somewhat or at least be a true workaround for others to hopefully not have to go through what I've been dealing with for the last month (at least)

Actually this is the starting point in the tutorials I meant to post. I can never quite remember the name...!

So my settings were already set to as the Tut recommended.

I really think the issue for me is after all this time there is a setting in the Security function that I am either not activating or there is something with the Inheritance rules for the Folders (despite it stating the Computer that has Admin and Remote access has full control over the drive)

    IDK
I'll still investigate but is there a thread or page that speaks of setting the Sharing and Security tabs (perhaps even GPC) to function so that at least 2 comps can share files (like the good ol' days?)

I don't know if this might make things easier:
Turn On or Off Public Folder Sharing in Windows 10

    and there's this to consider:
Turn On or Off Password Protected Sharing in Windows 10

Using the context menu (option 2, previous post) may make things easier as regards permissions.

It's not about who has control, but rather to whom you grant access.
I have to set "EveryOne" to full control in the Security tab of the drive for Rig 1 to have control.

    Hi there

    @Zeta09

Not sure what you are trying exactly to do here.

I believe on the server (or any Windows machine) you can set the relevant HDD / folder to "Shared" and allow everyone access.

For example --I suggest you don't do this on the "C" drive though --This is a VM so I don't care if it breaks though -- VM's good for testing all sorts of scenarios !!!

I don't understand (sharing files across the Win 10 network)-screenshot_20200810_115904.png

Then the clients can just connect to the shared drive/folder (or have at Client logon the drives connected automatically).

For example 2 networked shared drives here on Windows Client (set connect automatically at logon).

Are you saying your sharing the drive to everyone that's madness and windows won't like it as malware can run wild but NTFS would stop a lot all drives are shared with a $ is d$ and you must pass admin username and password

So let me try to explain fully

I have ALL the settings that have been posted on the previous tuts that Dalchina has linked
The Network & Sharing Center are correct.

I have a Mounted NTFS drive that is setup with RAID 5 and files on it that I want to share. It's set "Everyone" on the Sharing tab and if I go the actual drive (not the mounted Security tab) I can affect who has access is that not correct?. (with me so far?)

Yes Sumuria I KNOW it's crazy to have to do that and have the Security set to EVERYONE but again on the Security settings to the actual drive when I set the Computer (again I'll call it Rig 1) and give it Security access set to "Full Control" and the subsequent boxes checked=> I don't understand (sharing files across the Win 10 network)-cap-3.jpg
I get this lovely message (I've seen that stupid Win msg so much I could vomit) but when I add 'Everyone" to the Security list I have access to the files on the Drive.

That should not be the case. Rig 1 is part of the Admin group, Remote users group AND the Domain users (of which all three are on the Security list for access with FULL CONTROL) and yet I have to add Everyone to the Security and then I can access the Files across the Network

So the ISSUE is I don't WANT to have to set to Everyone in the Security tab as Sumiria is stating. He/She is quite correct that it's madness and with the settings that I have Rig 1 should already have access and be allowed to manage files since it is part of the three above groups.

So that is what I'm not understanding.

Again thanks for the responses and I'm hoping this can be resolved through our discussion to hopefully once and for all help others

    Anyone?
Was there something else that I didn't explain well/correctly?
