"windows can't communicate with the device or resource"

    Hi all,

i had this again just now, last one was maybe a month ago i guess. there are Event 4000s but nothing much else, my DNS is set as per a tip Samuriag gave me Missing Sites?

back now, but is this just a passing ISP issue? last time my wifi was out but i was fine on this wired connection [maybe it was fleeting and sorted itself by the time i logged on?] but this time both computers were showing the same issue. i powered off the router, maybe that was the fix?

odd though, as i sit here the internet light on my router [the little globe w/ the orbitting dot] is red, but i seem to be browsing ok :-/

EDIT - i set the DNS stuff in Windows, i've noticed my Router settings at routerlogin etc had a DNS setting too [set to get automatically] should i change this too or does the WIndows bit override?

    TIA

What does ipconfig /all show you?

To collect IP configuration information easily, do the following:

    Open a Elevated Command Prompt:

Press Win key, type cmd. Right click on cmd.exe at top left and select Run as Administrator.

Copy & Paste the following into the Command Prompt window, exactly as shown, including double quotes:

    cmd /c "ipconfig /all > postme.txt & ping yahoo.com >> postme.txt & reg query "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" | find /i "proxy" >> postme.txt & notepad postme.txt & del postme.txt"

    and press ENTER.

A file will open in Notepad. Please Copy & Paste the contents here. Please don't redact anything as there is nothing in there that is a security breach. Close the Notepad window and the file will be deleted and the Command Prompt window will also close. Post results in a reply here.

I would set DNS settings in the router, and let Windows get them automatically.

Automatic in the router usually gets your ISP's advertised DNS servers, which is not always the optimal choice.

I use public DNS servers (1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1), so those are set manually in the router.

It's also easier to change it in one place if there are issues, rather than run around the house changing it on all the devices that use the Internet.

It's possible your WiFi connection has a weak or congested connection on the channel it's using, and drops out temporarily.

I would recommend reviewing your WiFi configurations on the router.

Before making any changes, write down or screenshot your current settings.

If you are using auto channel select, try using channel 1, 6, or 11 for 2.4 Ghz, and 153 for 5 Ghz.

Using a WiFi analyzer can show you who is using what channels in your area, your signal strength, and your signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)...

    Windows...

NetSurveyor, Acrylic WiFi, inSSIDer, Wi-Fi Scanner (Lizard Systems).

Wireless Security should be using WPA2-Personal with AES encryption.

Select NG-Mixed for 2.4 Ghz and AC/N-Mixed for 5 Ghz if it's available on your router.

WMM should be turned on for both bands, and try the Beacon Interval at 100 and RTS Threshold at 2346.

Reboot the router and test your wireless connections.

I also have 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 set in my router.

    ipconfig /all shows
    DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 1.1.1.1
    1.0.0.1

even though IPV4 is set to:

"windows can't communicate with the device or resource"-image.png

so you can see it feeds down from the router.

    thanks guys.
I set up the specific entries in the routers as suggested, couldn't see the other stuff unless I wasn't looking in the right place.
it crapped out again last night during Netflix, for a couple mins. I put the computer on [the wired connection one] and it was giving the same error. switch off/on of the router and it was ok. maybe something's going on down the line? :-/ connection's on 24/7, and between home working and watching Netflix etc in the evening it's on a good amount of hours, other than those little blips it's stable.

    cheers

How many wired devices on the network?

    How many wireless?

Of those, how many use 2.4 Ghz, and how many use 5 Ghz.

Sometimes a router reboot clears things up.

    My router stays on 24x7.
