Since Win10 was running it most likely was Activated. Version 1511 is way old by 8 years. I'd try to get the latest and install but there may be some drivers issues. There most likely will be issues with reinstalling Win7 and trying the Upgrade mostly due to EOL/End of Life for activating Win7. Win10 is now at Version 22H2. 22 = 2022 H = Half 2 = Second Half Once Win10 is installed there will be some updates.
Hiya Berton, yeah, it works. But I almost had to redo the dang thing because I installed 4.73 Nvidia drivers and man oh man, Windows 10 did not like that. But I was able to remember to go into safe mode, then I remembered to find that new driver and delete it,. Lucky Windows picked up and the removed driver and put one on that works.

Since I had 22H2 on this system before (and upgraded from Win 7), I know it can handle it, but I am at a quandary of how to find any upgrades, since Windows 10 didn't pick up anything. things have to be simple for me these days as my thinking is not right anymore (medical, and that is all I am going to say, except dang Agent Orange 1970). Anyhow, thanks for the lesson. :) I am going to bed.

And I just noticed that SIW2 answered too. I will look for this tomorrow. I copied what to look for. So basically one doesn't have to install each update at a time??? Thanks SIW2 for the answer.

See Download Windows 10 ISO File -TenForumsTutorials and use Option 1 or Option 2.
and then use that ISO in a Repair Install [aka In-place upgrade] - TenForumsTutorials
Do keep the ISO. It's useful. There are some faults that can only be solved by repeating the Repair install procedure - it is not a reinstallation but it overwrites all Windows' system files with new copies so you can run it if you ever suspect that any of them have been corrupted by mischance.
After you have reached Version 22H2, the only updates will be a monthly "Cumulative update" and some small updates [MSRT, .Net framework, ...] together with twice daily updates to the built-in anti-malware utility Defender.

Now, I have seen some people say that you need to update to Windows 10 Version 2004 [using a Version 2004 ISO] from one as old as yours and afterwards repeat the Repair install procedure with a current Version 22H2 ISO.
If that does prove to be necessary, Option 4 of that ISO tutorial will take you through getting the 2004 ISO.

When everything is done, it will be worth your time making an InstallationUSB from the Version 22H2 ISO. But it's not essential.
Create Bootable Installation USB - TenForumsTutorials
There are times when an InstallUSB can be useful such as booting from the InstallUSB to carry out Startup repairs.

The only time when you would absolutely need to have an InstallUSB would be if you decided to do a full "Clean" install of Windows 10.

I would urge you to start making system images as soon as possible. They can turn a disaster into a mere inconvenience.

I also think it's well worth backing up your hardware drivers.

    Oh, and welcome to TenForums.

It's really worth making time to browse through the Tutorial index - there's a shortcut to it at the top of every page.
    - At the foot of the Tutorial index is a shortcut to download it as a spreadsheet.
    - I download a new copy each month.
    - By downloading it as a spreadsheet I can benefit from Excel's excellent filtering capabilities when I search for topics of interest.
    - Tutorials are also listed by category at Tutorials - there's also a shortcut to that at the top of every page.
    - Both tutorial lists are searchable.
    - You can also search for TenForumsTutorials in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:tenforums.com/tutorials after your search term. For example,
    taskbar toolbars site:tenforums.com/tutorials

You can search TenForums using the search box in the top-right corner of all TenForums webpages or using Advanced Search - TenForums
    - You can also search TenForums threads in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:tenforums.com after your search term. For example,
Search for drivers by HardwareID site:tenforums.com
    - [This is what the search box in the top-right corner of TenForums webpages does automatically]

    Denis,

Thank you for the concise instructions. This site is wonderful, but my gawd, it is a massive amount of information. To everyone who responded to me, thank you. I have a 32 GB USB stick available and will be trying to backup this computer before trying anything.

    Andy,

Yes, this forum is very good.

If you do make your USB stick into an InstallUSB then you can use the rest of the space [probably 24GB-ish] for other things afterwards.
I've got my main application installation files on mine but it's a bit of a waste because I have them backed up on my main backup disks anyway.

    All the best,
    And thanks for the rep,
    Denis
