    Can't upgrade from Win 10 Pro 1909 0xC1900101-0x20017

For months Windows Update has offered to install 2004 and then 20H2 but the install always fails after the first reboot and rolls back to 1909. I've tried reinstalling 1909 on top of itself from an ISO first and then upgrading, running the update from a 20H2 ISO file and even doing a clean boot before trying the upgrade from an ISO. All fail with the same error code:

    Can't upgrade from Win 10 Pro 1909 0xC1900101-0x20017-win-10-upgrade-errorjpg.jpg

Can anyone offer advice on how to resolve this?

    Thanks!

Hello @MrJordan , welcome to Ten Forums.

Many of us in similar situations, with various errors preventing a successful upgrade, have succeeded with an In-Place Upgrade. I'm not sure what upgrade methods you've tried so....

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

    DISABLE non-Microsoft:
    a) antivirus software
    b) firewall software
    c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect (free)
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free

Go here and get the Media Creation Tool and save it to your desktop.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

RUN the Media Creation Tool and use it to: Create an ISO image... save IT to your desktop.
This will be the latest version of the ISO image.

For older ISO image versions, go here instead...
    Download Windows 10 ISO File

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will look like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations. Your programs and data will be intact.

    Thank you @Ghot,

I looked at the instructions you provided but that is essentially what I have already tried.

I first did an inplace repair of my 1909 install from a 1909 ISO file to clear up any problems with it that may have been preventing the upgrade to 20H2. That completed successfuly. I then tried an inplace upgrade using a 20H2 ISO file but received the error message above. I tried again after doing a clean boot and received the same error message.

You might want to try going to v2004, first. v2004 was the real Feature Update, 20H2 was just tweaking some things, iirc.

There seems to be a lot of people with this error. I googled: error: 0xC1900101 - 0x20017

One solution was to update your chipset driver and your BIOS.

I don't know which BIOS you're running now, but I have never seen a weirder list of BIOS updates...
    ASRock > AB350M Pro4

    Chipset drivers... 10/19/2020
    https://www.amd.com/en/support/chips...ocket-am4/b350

Just looking at the total mess of BIOS updates, and the date of the chipset driver... my guess would be...that just might be your problem.

The chipset driver is probably the safest and easiest to test... first.

Just a thought... did you remove all peripherals connected to your computer before trying to upgrade?

    @Ghot

I agree with you on the BIOS updates! I'm going to try just the chipset drivers first.

@Jacee I don't really have any to remove. I unplugged my USB webcam but still had to have my USB keyboard and mouse connected.

    Mouse and keyboard are OK.
You need to disable any 3rd party AV, firewall or encryption programs.

20H2 came out 2nd week of October, then poof... AMD releases a new chipset driver.
That says to me... oops...we need this chipset driver so folks can upgrade to 20H2.
    Not scientific, but...

I wouldn't mess with the BIOS. With all those warnings and weird prerequisites, I'd call AsRock tech support and have them explain it.

0xC1900101-0x20017 is most often a rollback related to drivers.
    There can be other causes.

    List any installed non-Microsoft software:
    a) antivirus
    b) firewall
    c) drive encryption

Instead of troubleshooting you can perform:
    a) Windows refresh
    b) reset save files
    c) reset remove files
    d) custom install
    e) clean install

    Refresh Windows 10
    Reset Windows 10
    Custom Install Windows 10
    Clean Install Windows 10

    Please perform the following steps:

    Run:

Tuneup.bat - Click here to go to the BSOD batch repository to download and run this batch file.

DiskParInfo.bat - Click here to go to the BSOD batch repository to download and run this batch file.

LOGS.bat - Click here to go to the BSOD batch repository to download and run this batch file.

    @Ghot

I updated the chipset drivers last night and tried again with no success. Then I bit the bullet and updated my bios from P4.70 to P5.50 and attempted another inplace upgrade from the 20H2 ISO.

It was late when I started it so went to bed and checked it this morning.

    SUCCESS!

Thanks for the assistance and the suggestion to update the BIOS!
