    Macrium is the King

    This is the Way.
It sure is. Macrium is cloning away as I write (on my phone).
Macrium is what I use for my normal backups.

The reason I asked you to post a shot using PW is so we make sure you clone the correct partitions.

But just choose to clone everything.

The next important step is...will it boot.

No reason why not as it will only have one drive to boot from. On a desktop, if you keep the source drive attached you may have a partition ID conflict (Windows or Macrium boot repair can fix it)

That`s 1 reason I choose imaging over cloning. You simply tidy up the OS drive, update windows, and all your programs, defrag or optimize, Then make your image.

If you should buy a new SSD, or your drive just dies, Boom your image is right there. A simple 10 minute process and you`re up and running again

    Awesome, great job.

And yes, once your done, we have to see if the new SSD boots on its own.

Same thing happens on a laptop if you try to boot from the new drive while it's connected externally.

OK. I used Macrium to "clone" 3 partitions:
    1. System
    2. Old C (windows)
    3. Old E: (Data)

(I did not clone existing old G: and H because I do not need them).

But I noticed that the result is that the 2 logical drives have acquired different letters while the ssd is still connected via the usb adapter. (see attached screenshot)
C is now labelled D in the new usb attached ssd
E is now labelled F in the new usb attached ssd

I assume that normal and is because you cannot have 2 C drives, but I do not know if when I remove the laptop's old hdd and insert the ssd in its place if these drive letters will correct themselves and the laptop boot. So, I have not yet taken the old hdd out and replaced it by the new ssd in case I need to change some things before doing that. Should I do somethings else first?

It's now late. So I will go to sleep and wait to hear back from you experts tomorrow morning.

    Thank you.
