There's quite a large number/flavors of Linux, most free.
Sounds like your download also got corrupted. I use this one, haven't had a problem:

Do you know how md5sum works? The creator of the ISO file will run the md5sum program on a known good ISO file and come up with the correct md5sum value, which they need to publish or provide to you. Then after you download the ISO file, you run the md5sum program on it and will get a value in return. Then you compare the value you get in return with the original value that was published, and if they are the same, you know the downloaded file exactly matches the original file.
