Clean Install Failing - error code0x80070057

Hi all,

After failing to recover or repair my current Win 10 installation with all the tools available, I'm trying to do a clean install of Win 10 on a DELL PC with a 256GIG SSD.

I've created my USB installation media from Microsoft.

As advised on this forum I did the following:
Disconnect all other HD/SSD except the one you try to install Windows
Boot up Windows Installation media
On first screen, press SHIFT+F10 then type:
diskpart
select disk 0
clean
exit
exit
Continue. Select the unallocated partition (Only one shown) then click next, windows will create all needed partitions.
Done.

Diskpart confirmed the disk was cleaned.

The installer failed with error code 0x80070057. After running the installer a second time I could see that new partitions had been created (see attached) -- but it still throwing up the error when I try to continue.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately it hasn't worked - I can't delete the partitions as outlined in the linked article - it throws an error 0x80070001.

It does seem now the hard disk might be faulty.

The image displayed four partitions.
Which partition(s) were blocking right click delete?
Was the error messages the same for each partition?

What is the underlying problem that you are having with the computer?

Consider performing a reset remove files:
Reset Windows 10


Please indicate whether you do or do not need to backup or recover files.

All 4 partitions blocked the the delete command with error 0x80070001.

I have been through all the reset and startup options to try and repair the original install. I've moved on from that now, I had all my data backed up so I'm not trying to recover anything -- just do a clean install.

I thought SSD's were supposed to be less prone to corruption.

What had happened with reset remove files?

Had you tried a custom install?

Had you ran any override commands?

I've already ran the 'clean' command in diskpart, so there is nothing on the disk, nothing to log.

I'm trying to do a custom install, but it's not letting me, as outlined above.

Sorry, I don't know any 'override' command.

Find a flash drive that you can format (> or = 8 GB).

On a working computer create a new bootable Windows10 iso:

Boot to the Windows 10 iso > windows advanced troubleshooting menu > command prompt
This is the override command using diskpart:

(for each step make sure that you select the applicable disk and partition)

sel par 2
det par
del par override
sel par 3
det par
del par override
sel par 4
det par
del par override
exit

once all partitions are deleted > perform a clean install

Clean Install Windows 10

There are two ways to install Win 10. As Legacy - MBR or UEFI - GPT.
On the first image you posted (before cleaning) you had a UEFI - GPT disk.

To install as UEFI - GPT you MUST boot the installation disk as UEFI, not Legacy.
How / where did you get the installation iso?
What kind of installation disk are you using, DVD or USB flash disk?
If USB flash disk, how did you build it?

Hi, thanks for all the replies, I've resolved this.

When I tried to format the drive 'format fs=ntfs', the format failed, so the crash must have caused some damage to the disk. I had to use 'format fs=ntfs quick' to get it to format.

My fix was...
In Diskpart
1. Create Partition Primary
2 format fs=ntfs quick
3 set to Active

Go back to the Windows install GUI, which showed the single partition I created, hit delete, the partition was unallocated... and then click 'Next'. Windows then installed and created the partitions it needed.
