Games in Fullscreen Giving Blackscreen and Crashing Pc

So I used my PC for a while, until a problem came that ultimately ended up with me having to reinstall Windows from a fresh install. Before, I could game perfectly fine with no issues. Now however, whenever I boot a game into full screen mode, I can navigate for about 1-2 minutes before the screen goes completely back (Monitor says it has no signal). The game audio plays in the background for a bit before it goes into the “pc crashed” audio and my only option is to manually restart my PC.

This only happens for full screen though (and any type of FS like FS-borderless etc.). Playing in Windowed mode goes fine with no problems

I feel like it’s a driver issue, but I don’t know where. I remember updating to the latest Nvidia driver before reinstalling Windows and having to update it again after reinstalling. I tested it out with higher graphically intensive games like MW, and lower graphical intensity like CS:GO and both had the same issue. Temperatures seemed fine from what I monitored so I don’t think it’s an issue in that part. For reference, I have an EVGA RTX 2070 SUPER gpu and an ASUS PRIME Z390-P motherboard if that helps. I don’t think it’s a hardware issue, since it was working completely fine literally right before (although I could be wrong)

Are the games up to date with the latest patches?

Check the Event viewer and reliability monitor for issues at the time of the crashes. For me with an EVGA RTX2060 I would constantly get blank screen, sound continuing when running games full screen (running in a window was fine). Tried various versions of Nvidia drivers, ran Unigine benchmarks and Furmark with no issues reported, temps were fine. Checked Event Viewer and found errors related to nvlddmkm along the lines of "feature not found", these errors occurred at the time of the crashes, I could create another entry by running a game till it crashed. I started getting the same sort of error, blank screen even in Windows in safe mode.Turned out the VRAM on my card was faulty. Not saying that is the issue with your GPU, just something to look at.

Huh, never thought of that, will check it out when I get time. What did you mean by getting the same error in safe mode? Was your computer just crashing as soon as it booted in safe mode?

Not straight away no, but opening 1 or more windows or an app like DDU would cause a blank screen.

Interesting. Haven't had that experience yet so idk lol.

As an update though, I did go into Device Manager and completely uninstall the drivers, restarted and reinstalled them from Nvidia's website. I then tried it with Payday 2, where Steam further installed some DX12 drivers I think (can't remember exactly what) and suddenly...it worked! All the games I tried were running as smoothly as they should've been

That is until I turned off my PC. When I started it up again, suddenly everything stopped working once more (i.e., back to the fullscreen error). I wanted to System Restore back but because of Windows 10's dumbass updates I lost all my system restores (like seriously, 1 useless small Kinect update suddenly completely gets rid of all my valuable SR's?)

Are you using a wireless controller in games by any chance? If so try uninstalling it/ just not using it and see if it makes a difference, just an idea.

No, unfortunately I haven’t used a controller on PC for a while now

Have you checked the event viewer yet? It may point towards the issue. Also make sure for testing purposes you are not running the GPU overclocked, same for CPU and memory.

It could be this problem I have due to an error with cldflt.sys Crash Due to cldflt.sys on Exiting a 3D Game

A new version of cldflt.sys was issued with last week's cumulative update. I haven't had time yet to check whether that fixes the problem. You can try disabling cldflt.sys before running a game to see if that fixes the issue.
