Windows Phone Desktop application from MS. Anyway, that apparently can't access SMS, either.

This 💩💩💩 software demands that iTunes be installed, and still does so after it's been installed. The Mac version sees the 540, but says it can't copy SMS etc.

Try removing and reinserting the battery if removeable to reset the phone.

There's: Windows Device Recovery Tool

But with this tool, from what I've read, it does a "hard reset" on the phone. See if it has an option to back up your Contacts/SMS/etc and stuff before instead of a hard reset only.
