    Laptop randomly reset itself?

    Hi everyone,

I have this older Latitude E5440 (it's not great). I actually bought it from someone awhile ago (it had Microsoft Office) and used it for a bit and then let it sit for several months. I went to turn it on (it was very dead) and all of a sudden it was asking me to sign in as "New User". I tried all the passwords I would ever use and it also had a password recovery option by answering three questions but my answers do not work there either. Also, in the sign on screen, it says "Activate Windows" in the bottom right and then "Go to Settings to activate Windows" which seems strange, as I was using it before. What could have happened? Is there anyway to recover my old sign in so I can use Office? Or do I need to completely factory reset it?

    Thanks for any help!

Are you logging with a Microsoft Account (ie) Email address, or as a Local account, with your a name you made up?
If it's asking you to login as a New User, your User Profile may have become corrupted and it is creating a new profile.
If you are trying to login using a Microsoft Account, on another computer or smart phone, try to login to https://account.microsoft.com/ with your usual Microsoft Email address and password. If that fails, it will either send your security questions or send a code to another Email address or Smart Phone, which will allow you to change your password.
As for Activation, you can call Microsoft to Activate

The local account. I never signed in with my Microsoft account. The corruption hypothesis does make sense, but how do I sign in now?

it was asking me to sign in as "New User".
When Windows asked you to create a New User, you would choose whatever name and password you want. Type in the password you created.
Other then that, we cannot help you with your password as it is against Forum Rules as we don't know if you are someone that is not authorized to use this computer,

It is not asking me to create a new user, it is asking me to sign in as a "New User". So are you saying that no one will help me or I'm just screwed?

Looks like malware or a failing drive.

We are not sure what you are talking about? Did you leave the Password field blank?
