The Optane Memory Driver (which I'm certain I don't need; have no Optane hardware) went into BIOS and changed the SATA Mode Selection from AHCI to Intel RST Premium With Intel Optane System Acceleration. That's why my drives disappeared. Didn't even know it was possible to change BIOS settings outside BIOS. There's several drivers on Gigabyte website that do appear to be relevant to my system. I began to install them all, but I'm not going to install any now. I saw no evidence of hardware issues in any this. I'll restore the image and proceed with the in-place update.

It changed SATA mode from AHCI to what? Booting to safe mode would have probably fixed the issue, but odd that it changed to something you didn't want.

Does Gigabyte not have an app that scans your hardware/PC and tells you which drivers need updating?

    What a friggin nightmare!

After I restored the original SSD image, it booted to a KMODE BDS! I gave up all hope of salvaging anything.

I tried several times to do a clean install from the USB. Even though I selected the new SSD as the target, for some reason, setup kept installing Windows on the USB instead (very weird).

Finally, I followed your suggestion, removed the original SDD, disconnected all the SATA drives; leaving the new SSD as the only installed drive. Success! Clean install of Version 21H1 (OS Build 19403.1288). Activation successful.

BTW, when I ran Windows Update, it downloaded all the driver updates I needed.

And yes, Task Scheduler actually works.

This experience revives a motto I've not utter since the late 90's: Windows; the world's only self-corrupting operating system.

I just hope that Windows 11 is worth the expense and all the BS of the last two days! Busy day ahead tomorrow.

Thank you for all your assistance!

Happy to read of your perseverance and finally, victory

Thanks for confirming that removing the other drives worked. What type of drive did you install to (plain SATA?) and what were the ones you disconnected (m.2 NVMe, m.2 SATA or what?)

I'm sure you'll have a full backup of your working system before you try to install Windows 11 after this experience

New SSD: SK hynix Gold P31 500GB PCIe NVMe Gen3 M.2 2280 Internal SSD
Old SSD: Samsung 960 EVO Series - 250GB PCIe NVMe - M.2 Internal SSD
Hard drives: WD Caviar Black 1 TB SATA III (3 each)
    Ubuntu drive: Kingston 960GB A400 SATA3 2.5" Internal SSD

I don't intend to upgrade to Windows 11 immediately. Just had the time to do the hardware upgrade now (old hardware not supported by Windows 11, even though it was only 3 years old).

And yes, I will be doing regular images/backups with Reflect as soon as possible. And I need to figure out what went wrong with the image restore on the old SSD and ensure it never happens again.
