Alt key seems to get stuck since latest update (19042.985)

Since the latest Windows update (build 19042.985, version number 20H2) yesterday, I have had the same problem happen on two different computers. In both cases, the Alt key seems to get stuck so that, for instance, when I press Esc, I end up cycling through my windows and when I press Backspace, deleted characters are restored. Locking and then unlocking the screen seems to fix it, but I'm wondering what's going on because it's a bit annoying.

First of all, can you please provide the following information . . .

System Specifications - Quick Information for Posting

I wrote this to run in CMD Prompt.

Copy & Paste the below command into the CMD Prompt and press <Enter>. It's very quick, post the results . . .

    Code:

PowerShell Get-ComputerInfo ^| select OsName, WindowsProductName, WindowsEditionId, WindowsVersion, OsVersion, OsBuildNumber, OsHardwareAbstractionLayer, CsSystemType, OsLocale

These results are from an old machine I have to give you an idea . . .

    Code:

OsName : Microsoft Windows 10 Pro
    WindowsProductName : Windows 10 Pro
    WindowsEditionId : Professional
    WindowsVersion : 1909
    OsVersion : 10.0.18363
    OsBuildNumber : 18363
    OsHardwareAbstractionLayer : 10.0.18362.387
    CsSystemType : x64-based PC
    OsLocale : en-GB

Please update your system specifications [ System AND Hardware ] by editing your profile. It will allow us to give you more Specific Advice and Help! . . .

To make this process easier for you, there is an Automated method that you can use by clicking the Download button at the top of the Tutorial. It contains a standalone .exe file delivered in a .zip file. You just need to Unzip the file and Run SystemInfo.exe. Please note that this file does NOT save ANYTHING to your computer.

    • Please include Case, Cooler, HDD, PSU, SSD, etc.
    • Include ANY Peripherals attached to the computer, both wired or wireless [ Headset, Keyboard, Mouse, Printer, Scanner, Speakers, USB, Wireless Network Card, xBox, etc].

    Hello @ricecrispies,

Are there ANY Yellow triangles in the Device Manager => Control Panel > Device Manager?

Strange that the problem is on BOTH computers, which means it is more likely to be a OS problem [ WU ] as opposed to a Hardware problem though. There is also this option if you are unable to find an answer . . .

    > How to Go Back (roll back) to Previous Version of Windows in Windows 10

    I hope this helps.

Thanks for your responses so far. For some reason it seems to have stopped happening. If it happens again, I'll go through the procedures you have recommended and paste the results.

I've checked in Device Manager and there are no yellow triangles.

I'd assumed that if it happened on two different computers with completely different hardware straight after the same update, then that indicated a general problem with the update. But if no one else is reporting the problem, then maybe it was some weird coincidence. But as I said, if it happens again, then I'll follow all the steps recommended and post the results here.

That is typical computers for you!

By all means come back if the problem reoccurs.
