    Issues with Booting after Formatting

    Hello,

After having booting issues on my Samsung Series 7 All-in-one (i7). I decided to clean reinstall Windows 10. After installing, I am having issues with booting windows 10 and I am left with:

“The Boot Configuration Data file doesn’t contain valid information for an operating system

    File: \BCD
    Error:0xc0000098”

I tried to enter recovery environment by pressing F1 but it didn’t lead me to where the command prompt is.

So I entered the bios, and went to boot and changed my booting to CSM OS and restarted the computer.

This led me to the startup purple screen where you download Windows 10. I clicked repair this computer and it finally led me to the recovery environment (note: it was significantly slower when loading).

Now, after copying youtube tutorials on “how to fix bootrec/ fixboot access denied” and “repair windows boot partition” I am lost and this is what shows when I “list vol” and “list partition” on diskpart:

    Volume 0 E DVD-Rom 0B No Media
Volume 1 V NTFS Partition. 930 GB Healthy
Volume 2 H RAW. Partition. 499 MB Healthy
    Volume 3. G. FAT32. Partition. 100 MB

    Partition 1. System. 100 MB. 1024KB
    Partition 2. Reserved. 16MB. 101 MB
    Partition 3. Primary. 930 GB. 117 MB
    Partition 4. Recovery. 499MB. 931 GB

    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

Consider setting the BIOS to UEFI native (without CSM) and performing a clean install Windows 10 20H2:

    Clean Install Windows 10

    Download Windows 10 ISO File
Create Bootable USB Flash Drive to Install Windows 10

    Hello @adicoler,
    Welcome to TenForums.

Did you have any other Drives connected when you performed the Clean Install? . . .

     Disconnect ALL Other Disks

It is highly recommended that you disconnect [ temporarily unplug ] ALL other Disks [ HDD's/SSD's/USB's ] BEFORE installing Windows. The reasons for this are . . .

    • You CAN'T accidentally OVERWRITE a connected Disk.
    • The BOOTLOADER [ boot configuration files ] will get installed on the correct Disk [ because Windows has the tendency to install the bootloader rather randomly on ANY connected Disk ], and therefore STOP problems with booting once the installation is complete.

Once the installation is complete . . .

    • Check that the OS boots correctly.
    • Check if the boot order in the BIOS/UEFI settings are correct [ if NOT, adjust accordingly ].
    • Reconnectthe other Disks.

    EXPLANATION:

Windows uses a different partition structure for BIOS/UEFI. During the installation process, Windows asks which Disk / Partition you want to use for the Windows C:\ drive, it does NOT however, necessarily use the same Disk for the other Partitions, and can therefore incorrectly create the hidden recovery partition on ANY attached Disk.

Additionally, for BIOS, if another Disk is left attached, and at a latter stage you remove that Disk, you will find that the OS will NOT boot. If you check the BIOS, you will see that the OS has assigned the AHCI/RAID setting instead of the LEGACY setting and set it up as RAID, therefore breaking the boot process.

    I hope this helps.

Does that mean that you DID have other Disks connected when you performed the Clean Install?

    Hey @Paul Black

No I did not. I only had bootable USB with Windows 10 connected to the device.

On your instructions, do you mean I should unplug the USB upon downloading Windows 10?

    Hey @Paul Black,

I installed Windows 10 through the bootable USB and unplugged it upon competition. As I turned the computer back on, an error pops up stating:

“The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click “OK” to restart the computer, and then restart the installation”

I tried the OK button which led me to the same error.

This time, I plugged in the USB and restarted, which led to the same error.

[1] Where did you get the ISO from?
[2] What did you use to create the USB?
[3] Try creating another installation C]USB[/C].

    I hope this helps.
