As promised, I've cautiously tried a few tests, but can only offer a thought as to where to look next.
Note that Brink has previously published some tutorials on resetting and backing up explorer folder view settings.
Having run tests on the registry entries which I found changed when changing settings for
- Desktop Icon auto-arrange/arrange to grid
- Explorer folder view settings
HKU\S-1-5-21-1874168061-3408090847-1495916866-1001\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
\Explorer\UserAssist\{CEBFF5CD-ACE2-4F4F-9178-9926F41749EA}\Count\
I’ve concluded that whilst these change as described, they are probably temporary storage locations of some kind, rather than where the settings are stored.
If all the entries under this key are deleted, there is no discernible change, and the data entries are recreated.
I’m now wondering about HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU
- see the following, which does not consider desktop icon rearrangement.
So where is the data for explorer folder view options held? A further test showed that changing folder view settings changed
HKU\S-1-5-21-1874168061-3408090847-1495916866-1001\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\AllFolders\Shell\
However changing desktop icon auto-arrange settings does not change this. That then begs the question as to how the typical symptoms are that BOTH the auto-arrange settings and explorer folder view settings are affected.
This key reminds me of
http://www.askvg.com/how-to-fix-anno...windows-vista/
which some have tried without success, where rewriting the BAGS key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\
is said to prevent the "Automatic Folder Type Discovery" feature which was introduced in Windows Vista but instead of making something good, this feature has made the life of Windows users worst as Windows doesn't remember your customized view types for folders and automatically resets the view type based on folder content.
This key certainly exists in Win 10, but is not the same as the one I found changes.
For Vista, Brink published this:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/70...-settings.html
Note it refers to changing BagMRU which ASKVG’s ‘fix’ does not.
For completeness, for Win 8, Brink published these
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials...ndows-8-a.html
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials...e-windows.html
which reference
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU
HKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU
HKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bag
I hope this triggers some further ideas.
I installed ESET NOD32 this morning. After restarting my computer all the icons remained on the left side and Windows will not remember their position (or folder icon view settings. It always reverts back to small icons, even though I keep setting it to large icons).
Even downloading ShellFolderFix did not help.
I take it there is no fix yet? Reinstalling Windows would be a major hassle
Well actually it's very easy. I have done it twice just to see if it is in fact NOD32. Just use your backup image prior to installing NOD32 and then don't install NOD32 until there is a fix. With a Macrium image it takes me about 7 mins to restore my computer. When I did it the first time I didn't install NOD32 and the issue wasn't there. I like NOD32 and my subscription is good until next year so I reinstalled NOD32 and keeping it. Of course the icon issue returned. It returned after I did a complete scan.
Alright, but I didn't create an image prior to installing NOD32.
So now when I need to reinstall Windows I will need to back up around 80 GB of video lectures and 8000 images over USB2.
I like NOD32 as well. I did a complete scan this morning and I believe it auto deleted one file without asking me. With another file it asked me before deleting it.
I will write here what i wrote on the ESET forum for the issue :
"I am having the same issue with Windows 10 and i have ESET installed but here's where my issue occurred :
I wanted to allocate some space on my HDD to another partition so i download a defragmenter from auslogics which forced me to download boost8 even though i said not to download it. I knew it was a kind of virus so i proceeded to delete everything (but after running the defrag to analyze and optimize) and the issue occurred. I did a system restore to 1 day before and everything went back to normal.
Then i download Partition Wizard to partition and the issue occurred again after partitioning. Tried a system restore but could't get it to work because of issues on my side.
I tried every fix on the internet from checking if "auto arrange icons" was ticked (yes i know it's stupid but had to try at least) to deleting some reg entries.
Nothing worked.
It should go to note that During all that time NO updates were installed for Windows, NO virus scans were made and NO viruses were ever detected."
Good news
hello,
we were able to reproduce the issue, so it is under investigation.
We’ll notify you once we get any news.

With all due respect if these files are important they should be backed up already. I remember getting the call to look at a friends daughters laptop. She was panicking big time because all of her University work was on a non booting laptop. I rescued them via Linux. That episode taught her to backup on two seperate mediums .

You have all those important files in Windows partition? If so, its not a good thing. Don't you have multiple partitions? Also its better to keep duplicates of important files in multiple medium like Torquemada said.
I have dealt with some laptops with pre-installed Windows come with single partition that is the size of whole HDD. How come manufactures do this? Why don't they make multiple drives for users to keep files so that Windows re-installation or reset makes easy? Dividing partition isn't 100% safe and that too where Windows is stored and if broken then warranty is void.
Excellent, Finally they could reproduce. Now cannot wait for the fix. :)
May be they could also provide something that would fix the bug that users are facing and couldn't reinstall Windows.
Thanks for sharing.
