    Maybe try to remove, then readd the folders: Add or Remove Folders from This PC in Windows 10

    You can search for your files later. Try with treesize free, and look for large folders

    Please run the following from an admin powershell and let me know if they find any corruption:
    Code:

    sfc /scannow

    dism /online /cleanup-image /ScanHealth

    From the icons, it looks like the second & third 'documents' are in fact your music and pictures. I would guess the desktop.ini files in those folders has been corrupted. I won't be testing this on my PC, but you could try to re-establish the original destop.ini contents - for reference, these are mine:
    Documents
    Code:
    [.ShellClassInfo]
    LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21770
    IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-112
    IconFile=%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll
    IconIndex=-235
    Music
    Code:
    [.ShellClassInfo]
    LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21790
    InfoTip=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-12689
    IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-108
    IconFile=%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll
    IconIndex=-237
    Pictures
    Code:
    [.ShellClassInfo]
    LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21779
    InfoTip=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-12688
    IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-113
    IconFile=%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll
    IconIndex=-236
    I think we'd all be interested in the result! hth, Martin

    I recently carried out a clean install of Windows 10 on to a new drive installed to replace a problem one. During setting it up I seem to have messed up something in File Explorer so I have a number of system folders appearing under This PC which, although being set up to store the appropriate files, and having the appropriate icons, all have the same name i.e. instead of Documents, Pictures and Music, are all named Documents. Also, adding a file to any of them adds the same files to the others. Any advice appreciated. See screenshot below.
    The 'folders' showing under Libraries seem fine.
    Windows is 10.0.19041

    Charlie,

    What you refer to as "system folders appearing under This PC" are not folders at all but a special type of shortcut to the folders that are within your user folder
    C:\Users\%UserName%
    They are made to look like folders but they are not. MS thinks this is a helpful thing to do.

    The fault you are experiencing is that these shortcuts have been corrupted.
    The reason that adding a file to any of them adds the same files to the others is because they are merely shortcuts and some of them are pointing to the same places. No duplicate files are being created, it is merely that your views of your folders have been duplicated by the corrupted shortcuts.

    1 You can sidestep the issue completely by creating a replacement user account. Its user folder shortcuts will appear correctly in File explorer.
    2 Since you have only just (re)installed Windows 10 you might decide to sidestep the problem by doing that again. You'd need to backup your own files first so go to C:\Users\%UserName% for that i.e. do not rely on any of those corrupted shortcuts.
    3 If you knew what you did that caused this situation then it might be worth working through fixing each part of the problem. But if you do not know how the current situation came about then I think this would take more time & effort than either of the two 'sidestepping' solutions.

    Thanks Mngerhold - I'm no expert so did a search for desktop.ini and found dozens. There are three though which look likely with commondocuments, commonmusic and commonpictures in the filename in the WinSxS folder - would they be right? The entries are as follows:

    Documents
    [.ShellClassInfo]
    LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21801
    IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-3

    Music
    [.ShellClassInfo]
    LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21803
    InfoTip=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-12689
    IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-3

    Pictures
    [.ShellClassInfo]
    LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21802
    InfoTip=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-12688
    IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-3

    Charlie,

    No. The problem has nothing to do with the contents of WinSxS.

    Martin was suggesting that you look in the C:\Users\%UserName% subfolders.

    I disagree with this course of action anyway. It is not just icons that have been corrupted but also Target paths.

    Denis is right: I was referring only to the .ini files in the very 'folders' you are having trouble with. But creating a new user account is far simpler and safer.
