Set ALL folders to the same setup.

    Just a quick question.

What is the definitive answer to set ALL the current and future folders [ Basically, ALL folders on the OS - Single Type Template OS wide ] to . . .

    [1] List Details.
[2] List ALL the folders structure as Name, Date Modified, Type, Size.

I have looked at the following Tutorials . . .

    > Set Default Folder View for all Folders in Windows 10
    > Enable or Disable Auto Arrange in Folders in Windows 10
    > Reset Folder View Settings to Default in Windows 10
    > Change Folder Template in Windows 10
    > Apply Folder View to All Folders of Same Type in Windows 10
    > Change Folder View Layout in Windows 10

    Thanks in advance.

    EDIT:

I might have found the answer here => Change Folder Template in Windows 10

I might have skipped that one when investigating!

My personal experience is that folder settings have always been problematic and remain so, regardless of the Windows version.

The settings might work well for months or years and then you run into a peculiarity.

    For instance:

Everything's fine. The folder contains only a bunch of Excel or Word files (for instance). All you see is the file name, like recipes.xlsx or speed tests.docx, with a tiny icon no larger than the file name font. Just what you want.

Then you drop some jpegs into the folder.

And you suddenly then have a larger icon for recipe.xlsx and speed tests.docs and all the other non-jpegs---rather than a very small icon and name in a list. You then have to do a lot of scrolling while you tear out your remaining hair.

You then have to start fumbling around to reset.

It seems to be intermittent.........you can go years with no apparent issues, but sooner or later it recurs.

    True.

I was foolishly hoping to find a solution that once set OS wide that would be the end of it, but unfortunately now I don't think that is going to be the case.

I just want to be able to set a folder Template OS wide and for it to hold those settings regardless of the file types I drop into them.

I am currently investigating a batch script to achieve this as it is sort of outside of the OS handling so to speak, and therefore might be able to achieve the required results.

I don't know if a REG file would be able to adjust/change ALL the existing folder structures.

    Let's assume it did.

How many hours or months of ordinary exposure to the dreaded "Windows Update" would that survive?

Which is my major complaint about updates generally. Just yesterday, I was in hardware hell due to Windows Update overwriting something I'd prefer it had left alone.

The implementation of MS WU's [ running WU ] are over rated in my opinion. I use an alternative method which gives ME the control [ rather than MS TELLING me what I should have installed ] of what I want on my system.

I know what you mean about WU making changes to the customizations that a user has already made. I have a folder that contains all of my BAT-CMD-PS1-REG-VBS customizations [ about 150+ or so ] which I ran directly after installing my customized ISO. I also created a script for each of the file types that I can run at any time which iterates through the folder and puts back the settings [ if any were changed by WU ] and takes less than a minute for each.

    Paul,

Once you've set up your folders the way you want them [setting a sample General type folder up manually then calling all yours General type folders then using the Apply to folders button] you can backup your default folder definitions and restore them whenever you need to [if, say, an update has reset them].

My back up and restore Default folder views ditty - TenForumsTutorial

If dropping a file type such as a picture into a folder changes its folder type then you can change them all back again by resetting views
Reset Folder View Settings to Default - TenForumsTutorials
    - I thought I had seen a thread about how to turn off this Automatic Folder Type Discovery [Windows' ability to automatically change folder types to suit the file types in them] but I cannot find any notes on the subject.
    - All I can find is an external article How to Fix Annoying Folder View Type Automatic Change Problem - AskVG but I felt sure I had seen it discussed in TenForums.
    - This procedure includes disabling Automatic Folder Type Discovery-Change the Template of a Drive, Folder, or Library [Options 3] - TenForumsTutorials

I'm very interested to know what method you use.

I tried to send you a PM, but I got an error:

I also avoid automatic WU. I use the steps given in My scheme for managing WU [my post #73] - TenForums
    - That thread also has some other suggestions.
    - I never have any problems with my method so I have never properly evaluated any other scheme.
