Some mornings, Laptop running, screen stays black...

@zbook, you'll probably remember this. It does still continue. To bring things up to date:

My laptop has been doing this for months. Posted 3-4 months ago, and you had me go through a lot of different diagnostics.

My experience was that the laptop would do Windows Update at midnight show successful updates, but laptop would be running, very warm, and screen remains black after opening lid. Forced to do a hard incorrect shutdown/reboot by holding power button.

After trying all the things in the previous thread, I finally decided to backup data, reformat the laptop, and reinstall everything fresh. After that it would still do it (not every night), but not necessarily with associated Windows Update processes. I decided that it must be a hardware problem, and decided I just need to live with it.

Last week, I had another issue with Windows Updates, and went through a process where ultimately you provided links to have me do an in-place upgraded/repair. (Thread here.) That problem is fixed.

So, I had hopes that would also stop my issues with it being on/frozen in the mornings. It did not. I'm not sure it is something anyone would want to spend any time with me on it, given the history. But thought I'd start a thread on it again...maybe something has come up on this type of issue since then.

Attached is a V2 logcollector file.

    Here's a reliability report:

What is the warranty status for the computer?

With the recent Windows in place upgrade repair there is only two days of logs.

    There were no BSOD.
There was on Event ID 41 and 6008 crash.
These can be seen when there is a manual power off after a hang or freeze, malfunctioning hardware, BSOD, etc.

There was one user mode crash (application).

The computer has been having corrected hardware errors.

Download and install HP UEFI hardware diagnostics: (version 7.6.1) (left side of this webpage)
    https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/.../pc-diags.html

Plan to run the testing overnight in loop until error mode.

Power on the laptop and repetitively click F2 or F10.
Open the HP UEFI hardware diagnostics > system > extensive > loop until error > run overnight > the next day if there have been two or more loops click esc > run the component tests for graphics (many component tests are interactive) > run any other component tests as needed > take pictures of the tests performed with results > post images into the thread

    Plan additional hardware tests.

For any black screen click these 4 keys simultaneously:

First note: I changed the title of the thread. I do NOT have this problem every morning, which the original title implied that I do.

I did find your statement of "There was one user mode crash (application)." Interesting. I guess no info on what application that was?

    All tests I ran passed:

I'll do some of the checking you suggest, but I need to answer your question first. Regarding warranty, it is out of warranty.

I'd be a little surprised if it had to do anything with temperature, as I might have it on long periods of time till I'm about run the battery out never have any problems except when it's been off at night came on at midnight to check for or install Windows updates in which case it then in my opinion doesn't shut down right and locks up.

At any rate I'll get to your other tests and get back to you.

    Thanks

The mouse cursor did not move?

No. Totally black screen; no cursor; no audio, only thing I hear is the fan running. To get past it I must hold power button to kill it, then power on to boot.

Just thought you should know...immediately after downloading the linked Minitool Wizard, Microsoft Defender quarentined a file:

I ran this, and my problem did not meet any of the three scenarios from which to choose for troubleshooting, so I did not continue:

I wasn't sure if you wanted me to select / do any of the check disk options. For now, I am providing the initial screen that comes up, as it seems that is what you wanted:

Did Microsoft defender display a warning before the download or did it quarantine after download or both?
