Dell XP’s 13 black screen on power up

Just arrived in India on 3 week photographic trip to find my laptop just powers up to a black screen. No logo or signs of life. Just before I left home updated various things and last action might have been update and shutdown. Guessing something has updated a driver that is corrupt.

ive tried the turn on and off 3 times to get into safe mode but just a black screen. Machine is getting hot so guess it is running.

any suggestions how to get into safe mode appreciated as assume then I can uninstall the graphics driver which is probably the cause.

    much appreciated any advice

    mike

Only light is power button. The light on caps lock comes on it I press it. No dell logo or anything on the screen just perm at black. Will try some of things suggested. Most common advice is to manually power off 3 times to force start up repair, but this doesn’t happen for me

I asked that question to find out if black screen come up before or after windows start. Usually you can see manufacturer's logo, covering BIOS P.O.S,T. screen and that's before OS starts booting.

Hi zbook. Afraid all of these don’t work. First link assumed you get past dell logo. Other links assume you can get into safe mode by turning on and off 3 times which I can’t. All other options can only be done after you login. 3 idea I tried and as I said caps lock light comes on but pressing other buttons suggested do nothing and no sound.

as I have just arrived on holiday I have no access to installation material. My wife has a laptop so could I download some win10 installation files to a portable hard drive and then do something to kick it into life?

    thanks

It's hardware problem, you must be able to see BOOT screen to do anything about OS. Another thing to try is to take battery out and use only power adapter.

So I downloaded the win 10 installation media onto a flash drive, plugged it in and power up and nothing happened. I suspect the bios is not set to boot from external drive. Seems wierd hardware has gone since closing it down 3 days ago. Can’t take battery out as don’t have right screwdriver. I’ll ave to take it into a dodgy Indian computer shop ups. The Himalayas!!!!

    thanks for you help everyone
