Cannot change keyboard for English from US to US International

    Hello,

I am new in W10. Still busy installing and familiarizing...
Installed my TWO main languages: English/US and DUTCH (my native language)
Installed the US INTERNATIONAL keyboard for both languages.
    It worked...

    But...
Today I noticed that my ENGLISH US has the default US KEYBOARD again.
And more trouble: I can NOT set it back!
The Dutch US International keyboard is still ok.

When trying I noticed a red warning text on the top of the settings page.
Something like: Some features are hidden or managed by your organisation.

But there IS no organisation attached to my private pc. I am retired.
Searches came up with instructions: Steps to reset Local Group Policy Editor to default.
I downloaded and clicked their recommended bat file for this process: Restore-GPEDIT.bat
    No effect at all!

    What is the cause?
    And what is the remedy?

    Thanks for helping!
    Wim

Some features are hidden or managed by your organisation.
Many people have asked about this message which is confusing.

    a. Changes to settings are usually recorded in the registry.
    b. One way to change some settings is to use the group policy editor (Pro up).
    c. MS views such changes as having been made by an organisation's admin- hence the message.
    d. However, such changes can equally be made in Home by 3rd party tools or registry edits.
    e. If such a change is detected, you get the informative message.
    f. Whilst in Home (which edition do you have??) there are internet texts about enabling the group policy editor, it is not then at all guaranteed to function as it does in Pro up.
    g. Occasionally (exceptional) it's been seen even after a clean install... or installing an update.

It is indicative. It is not an error.

I have seen that message in red and so far running the Update and Security feature in Settings has had it removed after a reboot.

After reboots and reclicking the .bat file all remains the same.
    My W10 is version 1803.

I do consider it an ERROR if a message is unclear or incorrect. Users should not be made detectives who must find out what the message could PERHAPS mean - and what NOT...
Error messages in most applications are usually non-information, only understandable by experts.
As if you ask someone the way to a shopping center and he answers with an Einstein Relativity Theory Formula...

    By the way:
Some other website solved my unchangeable keyboard problem:
With a simple sentence: look under the MAT...

This too can be considered a Windows error, rather stupid:
BECAUSE THE OPTION TO CHANGE THE KEYBOARD IS HIDDEN UNDER THE MAT: THE GREY BAR DISPLAYING THE SELECTED LANGUAGE.
No signal, mark, text to refer to that invisible option location and instruction to lift the mat...

Problem solved. But not by Windows...
Hope W10 will do MUCH better after the next updates!

    Thanks, anyhow.

Glad you found an answer. Note: a screenshot could have helped us see what you were seeing.

    1. With error messages - simply search - see my signature - and let e.g. Google find things about them.
Whilst I agree error messages should be clear, many are not, a sad reflection on the development standards.

Therefore we are often forced to rely on a data bak of user experience.

    2. One way would have been to search this forum for the error message.

    3. As you are unhappy, and feel this strongly, please take the time to use the Feedback Hub app to tell MS directly.

    4. Moaning here alas doesn't count- we are all users. You need to moan to MS.

It's the MS way to grey any section in Settings that can be clicked on to show further options as you hover the mouse over it. The same principle applies to known networks in Network & Internet > WiFi > Manage known networks, and in System > Storage, for example. If you feel this isn't clear enough, then use the Feedback Hub to complain.

As you have now found the keys under the mat, you may like to know how to rearrange them so that the keyboard language you want as default is selected at boot up. It is simply the one at the top of the list. So if the one you want isn't at the top, remove the one(s) above it then add them back in. They will be added back in at the bottom of the list.
