AUDIO
Note: Audio is a little more complicated, because the PS4 only supports digital audio out. However, there are a variety of ways to handle it. Below is a list of possible options; choose based on your ideal setup.
1. If your monitor has built-in speakers and an HDMI input, your monitor may be able to play audio through its speakers without the need for any additional cables. If possible, read reviews online to see if others have had success with such a setup; not all monitors may be capable of accomplishing this. If yours cannot, or if you would prefer higher quality audio, choose from one of the other options below.
2. If your monitor has built-in speakers and 3.5mm "headphones style" input jack(s), you will need the following items: a digital optical "TOSLINK" audio cable, a digital optical-to-RCA converter, and an RCA-to-3.5mm male cable. — Plug one end of the TOSLINK cable into your PS4 and the other end into the converter. Next, plug the RCA cable’s red/white ends into the outputs on the converter. Finally, plug the other end of the RCA cable into the input jack on your monitor. If you would prefer higher quality audio, choose from one of the other options below.
Note: If you prefer higher quality audio than what built-in speakers provide, or if your monitor does not have built-in speakers: you will need an external audio source. It could be as simple as cheap computer speakers or a full surround sound system. Below are the required items for all options; choose based on your ideal setup.
1. If your monitor does not have built-in speakers, but connects via HDMI and has a 3.5mm "headphones style" output jack, you may be able to play audio through any external device that plugs into this port. For example, if you have external speakers that connect using a 3.5mm "headphones style" input cable, simply plugging the speakers into the monitor's output jack should deliver sound, provided HDMI is being used for video input.
2. If your external speakers connect using a 3.5mm "headphones style" input cable, you will need the following items: a digital optical "TOSLINK" audio cable, a digital optical-to-RCA converter, and an RCA-to-3.5mm female adapter. — Plug one end of the TOSLINK cable into your PS4 and the other end into the converter. Next, plug the RCA adapter’s red/white ends into the outputs on the converter. Finally, plug the speaker's output jack into the input jack on the RCA adapter.
3. If your external speakers connect using a 3.5mm "headphones style" input jack, you will need the following items: a digital optical "TOSLINK" audio cable, a digital optical-to-RCA converter, and an RCA-to-3.5mm male cable. — Plug one end of the TOSLINK cable into your PS4 and the other end into the converter. Next, plug the RCA cable’s red/white ends into the outputs on the converter. Finally, plug the other end of the RCA cable into the input jack on your speakers.
4. If your external speakers connect using RCA "red/white" input jacks, you will need the following items: a digital optical "TOSLINK" audio cable, a digital optical-to-RCA converter, and an RCA male-to-male cable — Plug one end of the TOSLINK cable into your PS4 and the other end into the converter. Next, plug one end of the RCA cable’s red/white ends into the outputs on the converter. Finally, plug the other end of the RCA cable into the red/white input jacks on your speakers.
5. If your external speakers connect using a digital optical "TOSLINK" input jack, you will need only a digital optical "TOSLINK" audio cable. — Plug the TOSLINK cable into your PS4, and plug the other end into your sound system's TOSLINK input jack.
6. If you intend to use standard (analog) headphones as your external audio source, and if they connect using a 3.5mm "headphones style" output jack, it is recommended to simply use the headset jack built-in to the PS4’s DualShock 4 controller, by pressing and holding the PS button and selecting "All audio" to headset.
