DVD Player not working after automatic Microsoft update, software

A few days ago there was an automatic update to my Windows 10 operating system. After the update when I put a DVD into the multimedia optical drive, all I get is the message, "Insert a DVD into the drive." I've tried several DVD's but none work.

When I put a CD into the drive, it works perfectly. I see the DVD player listed in This PC.

A friend who lives in the same building as I has had exactly the same problem. What can we do to solve this problem?

Hi, perhaps you could clarify what sort of DVD you are referring to.. e.g.
    - blank (DVD-R, DVD-RW, dual layer)
    - pre-recorded (film)
    - audio
    - data
    - something else

What happens when you try to look at the drive using file explorer? can you see the files/folders on the DVD?

More details about the non-functioning DVD player

The Multimedia Optical Drive on my computer functions for CDs but not for DVDs. I tried many types of DVDs but all I get on my monitor is the message, "To play something, insert a DVD." This all happened after the automatic Microsoft update several days ago. When I look at File Explorer, I see the DVD Player with the name of the disc that is in the drive.

I thought there was perhaps an easy fix to this because obviously I'm not the only one experiencing this problem. I wish I could make the problem clearer but I am not technically skilled.

And can you play DVD videos if you install e.g. VLC player?

I now have "Use AutoPlay for all media and devices" checked.

I accessed the Control Panel and checked the Use AutoPlay box then saved the change. I also restarted my computer. But still the DVDs do not play.

What is the best way to download the VCL player? I'll try that.

The inability for my DVD player to work came right after the Microsoft update. Do you think this might have been responsible for the problem?

    Thanks for your help.

    DVDs are playing again

After uninstalling the KB4013429 Microsoft update and restarting my computer, the problem is solved. Now when I insert a DVD into the Multimedia Optical Drive, it plays perfectly.
