    USB format problems

I am having difficulties with some of my usb sticks, each time I plug one in it tells me I have to "format drive before you can use it"
when I try to do this the drop down format box it only shows 2.49 Gb when the drive is a 64 Gb device then when I try It says the device is write protected. Some help please.

First you must clear write-protection, then you can format the drive.

In this video, i will explain how you can fix "The disk is write-protected" error message.

    Hello @longshanks70,

As a start, what does the USB show in Disk Management [ such as Partitions etc ] ?

Please post a screenshot of your Disk Management. Make sure that ALL the text in ALL the columns is visible and showing the whole window. UPLOAD the screenshot using one of the following methods . . .

    > How to Post a Screenshot of Disk Management
    > How to Upload and Post Screenshots and Files at Ten Forums

Alternatively, if you have > MiniTool Partition Wizard Free or > AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard, use one of those instead.

    I hope this helps.

Just out of curiosity, is the USB drive a name brand USB drive? Not some cheap knock off no name device?

Freebooter's advice may be what you need to do to unlock the device. There are programs I believe that will do that as well.

    Hello @longshanks70,

DISKPART - Clean and Format USB

Alternatively, to Reset a USB back to how it was New . . .

    Clean AND Format:

[1] Type cmd in the Search box.
[2] In the Right-Hand Pane, select CMD - Run as Administrator.
[3] Type EACH command below Individually into the CMD Prompt and press Enter.

    diskpart
    list disk
select disk # Where # is the USB Disk Number.
attributes disk clear readonly OPTIONAL - Use if USB shows as Read-Only in Disk Management.
clean This will ERASE EVERYTHING from the USB.
    create partition primary
    select part 1
format fs=NTFS quick Change to format fs=fat32 quick for FAT32 [ See NOTE: below ].
    assign
    exit To EXIT diskpart
    exit

    NOTE:

If you want a more advanced and thorough clean option, then replace clean with clean all. This OVERWRITES the ENTIRE disk with zeros, making sure that the data can NOT be retrieved. This takes a LOT longer time to run, so beware.

    NOTE:

If the FILES that will be used are NO BIGGER than 4GB, then you may want to Format the USB as FAT32.

    I hope this helps.

This usually means drive has failed. It is a common failure to fail read only.

Speaking as someone who used go to on regular business trips to London, I got used to some regional accents but not others. I would have to ask some people to repeat themselves, which was very embarrassing for me.

Not meant in any way to show disrespect, mate.
