Thanks everyone for your time and help/suggestions.
Well it happened again - start up "no bootable source found" - or words to that effect.
I was very fortunate to have an old laptop (no longer in use.) This has a Samsung evo 850. So with no expense, I have been able to fit this in place of the Kingston ssd.
The difference in speed has been very evident.
I must now wait and see if the disk holds its data over the next days/weeks.

    RESULT !!!!!
well, despite all the good test results that said the Kingston ssd was 'healthy' - in reality it was the Kingston ssd at fault. Fitting a dated Samsung EVO 850 drive has transformed this old computer to a slick/fast machine. Responses are near instant. Startup and shutdown times have improved dramatically. Time for a macrium back now takes a third of the time from previous time. PC now stable, so I believe its problem solved.
Thanks again for all your comments etc
