Micro SD Card Will Not Format

I have tried everything I can think of to format this card and nothing works including command prompt. I've received error messages saying everything from the card is protected which it is not, to the format was successful when it was not, to command prompt saying that the volume size is too big.

    Ideas?

SD cards often have a switch on the side, ensure this isn’t on.
Have you tried using diskpart to clean the card?
Right click Start>Powershell with admin & enter:
    Diskpart
    List disk
Select disk X (where X is the number of your SD card)
    Clean
    Exit
    Exit

Then go to disk management & create a partition on the card.
If you have already tried this & it says it is write protected then the drive has failed.

This may be caused by your SD card Reader. Put the Micro SD card back into your phone or whatever the device it is used in and try Formatting it there.

I think that you will only start to make progress if you can do these tests:-
1 Can you copy an individual file to the SD card or does it resist all write attempts?
2 Can you copy to & format other SD cards?

3 What does Disk mgmt [C:\Windows\System32\diskmgmt.msc] say about it?
    3.1 Has it been initialised?
3.2 What is its current format?

    4 History
4.1 Is this a new, unused SD card? Did you buy it from somebody trustworthy?
4.2 Is it fairly new but previously used without incident? Might it have worked alright with less data on it and these problems have started since you started putting more on it? Did you buy it from somebody trustworthy?
4.3 Has it been in use for years & might it have reached its end of life? Write errors are generally the first sign of a worn out SD card or USB stick.

    Best of luck,
    Denis

There is a sandisk tool (or maybe others) to format.

I haven't had much trouble with the MicroSDXC card but sometimes the correct SD Adapter, the one it came with, has to be used.

If you cannot format drive, using diskpart command, it is almot certainly either a knackered card or worse still, knackered reader.

Thank you for all of the responses. I've tried and checked everything mentioned and still nothing. One thing I've noticed is I can delete a folder on the card and see it go away but when the card is loaded again it reappears and remains.

I'm guessing it's shot. On the positive side it is readable so I was able to backup the 200 Gb contents of the card onto another drive.

I agree since the same has happened to me. SanDisk would not honour their warranty without returning the dead drive containing data I couldn't delete!
