    Completed 1909 Security Update-Please Help-Drive Letters R Now Broken

    Win version 1909 build 18363.1316

Windows force-installed its 1909 Security Update - When it installed and I opened Windows Explorer I noticed my drive letters are now changed - apparently resulting from Windows somehow mounting something as a CD drive as Drive E (no I don't have PowerISO or anything like that installed).

I did find a category of people, per Google searches, who've had windows add a second CD Drive, but none of the solutions on those results pages have worked (yet).

As it stands, unless I can fix this, it means all the music work I've done is virtually unusable since the projects are pointing at the wrong file locations (meaning that loading requires hunting manually - since my DAW just lists the files, not where they originally were located...) I tried for about 3 hours to Google various queries and followed all the advice (that I understand...) on how to fix this issue but I've yet to sort it.

My DVD Drive is Drive D. C had filled up so the drive on which I have placed a lot of music project data was Drive E. It now shows as Drive F.

Disk Management does not show CD Drive E. (It does show DVD drive D) Or I would simply change its letter and unmount it so I could re-name the original Drive (now F) back to Drive E.

Drive E does not show under diskpart. There may be something there but it isn't clear so even if I tried to remove it in Command Prompt I could do something harmful.

I tried to Eject CD Drive E. (An error occurred while ejecting CD Drive E was the response).

I tried to locate the drive by variously in System/Device Mgr, using view hidden, looking under connections and devices, etc. I tried to uninstall the drives or usb devices that I thought could potentially be this new CD Drive E. And rebooted my computer each time. Did this about 6 times including just now. CD Drive E is still there. In fact, there is a USB Hub that I've uninstalled that keeps popping back up as well. So I have no forensic way - from what I know, to figure out why, all of the sudden, Windows Update decided that I now have

I looked at my list of recently installed programs and nothing seems to potentially be likely to
I installed a demo of a program called WinCatalog2020 a week or so prior, but didn't change anything in it that I think would create a drive image. And the drive doesn't show up in it anyway. The drive (Drive E) doesn't show up in AOMEI Partition manager either.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Hi, thank you very kindly! Just a quick response as I try your suggestions. As mentioned in my initial post, the new ghost cd drive E (if that's what it is) doesn't show up in Disk Manager, nor does it show up in my tools like AOMEI partition mgr (or mini partition wizard). And it doesn't show up as a volume letter in Diskpart (not 100% sure if it even shows up as a listing there). Hopefully this is not required to help me. I'm downloading and running Tuneup.bat and DiskparInfo.bat - greatly appreciated!

Okay, I've downloaded the files, scanned them with antivirus, copied to my windows utility folder. Received windows warning, run anyway, the first one ran for a second but closed. So I turned off Bitdefender's modules. And ran again as admin, this time the console was only visible for such a fast instant that it was almost hard to see it. Ran diskparinfo.bat the same way. Got the same result - the batch program opened for such a brief instant that I couldn't see anything, and closed (again, antivirus is off.)

    - - - Updated - - -

Windows took responsibility - a tech agent named Sumit Dan spent hours on the phone with me fixing this (an hour and 38 minutes - plus doing the Oct 2020 update - but being available if it didn't work - but it did), which was surprising. At first I had the usual hell and got hung up on 3 times (I blame Covid 19 and their remote headsets). Sumit said that my computer was not ready for the security update it forced on me a day ago, and this is why it left the un-deletable cd drive in the E Drive spot. He then managed to go back through some previous unworking udpates and get me moved forward. I still had to do a bunch of extra work and lost about a day in the process overall for which I'm not being compensated. But AT LEAST they were willing to own up to the situation and Sumit was patient and persistent.

    @graphite

Next time that happens... just right click the ghost DVD drive and choose: EJECT

    Hi, thank you!

As stated in my original post, "I tried to Eject CD Drive E. (An error occurred while ejecting CD Drive E was the response)."

I would just do an In-Place Upgrade to 20H2.
In-place Upgrades fix a lot of Windows errors.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

    DISABLE non-Microsoft:
    a) antivirus software
    b) firewall software
    c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect (free)
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free

Go here and get the Media Creation Tool and save it to your desktop.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

RUN the Media Creation Tool and use it to: Create an ISO image... save IT to your desktop.
This will be the latest version of the ISO image.

For older ISO image versions, go here instead...
    Download Windows 10 ISO File

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will look like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations. Your programs and data will be intact.

If you don't want to go all the way to 20H2, see the "For older ISO image versions, go here instead..." section of my guide.
