A hard drive is invisible to disc management

Simply does not even appear anywhere in any program in win 10.
However drive appears in the bios.
Using Ubuntu drive appears in gparted and disks, and I can create and delete partitions on it.

The history of the drive, it recently had a severe boot problem, and I copied most of all my data off. If I tried to boot win7 or ubuntu from it, it error-ed, for windows saying ' a disk read error has occurred'. However in the ubuntu file manager all the files are there and can be copied.

Is there a program that can show the drive in windows 10? I think, when win10 boots, it somehow rejects the drive as a drive.

    1) First check to see if the drive is identified by the BIOS.

    2) If the drive is identified by the bios then open each:

    a) device manager > disk drives > post an image into the thread

    b) disk management > widen these two rows before posting an image: Status and Volume > double check the status column and make sure that is sufficiently wide so that none of the characters are cutoff > post an image into the thread

    c) file explorer > post an image into the thread

    3) Download and install: Drive letter view version 1.6

Post an image into the thread

Ok here they are. The missing 750gb Hitachi drive is in the memmory of device manager as a hidden device. As of course a while ago it used to work in windows.

    1) Please use a camera or smartphone camera to take a picture of the BIOS and post an image into the thread

    2) For file explorer click on this PC > post an image into the thread

    3) For drive letter view widen the Instance ID column and post an image into the thread

    4) Run the BETA log collector and post a zip into this thread:
BSOD - Posting Instructions - Windows 10 Forums

    5) Use these links to troubleshoot yellow triangles or unknown devices in device manager:
How to easily find drivers for Unknown Devices in Windows | PCWorld
How to Find Drivers for Unknown Devices in the Device Manager

    6) Open device manager > click view > click show hidden devices > manually expand all rows > post images into the thread for any other devices displaying either a yellow triangle with black exclamation mark or unknown device

Run an admin command windows. Run diskpart, then automount enable then restart. Do you see the drive then?

See Enable or Disable Automount of New Disks and Drives in Windows

Can you see the drive and explore the contents using Minitool Partition Wizard?

Assuming you manage to assign it a drive letter (so it's then visible using file explorer for example), make sure you test it given your comments about read errors etc.

Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) gives the best quick assessment I know, or you can try just using SMART parameters and a surface scan using e.g. HD Tune (Health and Error scan tabs) - free.

Bios screen to show the 750gb hitachi drive. And windows wanted to do a major os update. so I have been battling with this since yesterday. I thought it had died, it boots 10 to that revolving wheel, then the whole screen goes black after a long time, then it reboots. A reboot loads linux grub which defaults to ubuntu. Then I have to restart and it gets hung on the bios screen. The only way forward is to unplug the PC from the wall and reboot. I select win10 to boot, it goes through the same mess.

So I booted the win10 CD, and did a SFC /scannow. it comes back clean and says it is in middle of upgrade. So I shut down, and it finally starts upgrading now at 50%, but then it shuts down to restart and I am back to the black screen again for a very long time! Then again the update screen and it is at 75% now.
Win 10 update is taking a very very long time. Booting that install DVD also took way too long, about 45 minutes to get to the command prompt to run sfc.

You have to be patient- if it's a feature upgrade to 1809 (I assume) as you have chosen to accept updates as part of the upgrade, not only does it have to download and process some 3-4Gb initially, but almost as much again by way of updates.

You'd perhaps have been better to have made sure no updates occurred whilst sorting out problems.
Easy if you have Pro, and there are tools you can use with Home.
