Black streen and then freeze. CPU, GPU or software issue?

Well I've spoken too soon. The issue was still there up until I made a clean reinstall of Win10. Meanwhile I got the suspicion that AVG may be responsible for the lagging issues because it also consumed a significant amount of resources. Without AVG the problem is yet to appear again since the reinstall.

I also spent the last few days trying every driver for the GPU back to 2015. Eventually I totally messed up the whole operating system causing weird stuff like sound only working if I messed with the drivers after every reboot and stuff. But to no avail, the GPU issue is a persistent one, it's still there.

All I have noticed was that the copper tubes that lead to the heat sink were hot (about 60 Celsius) while the thermosensor indicated only ~45 Celsius before the computer crashed. Not sure if this means anything.

I was also thinking about what if this is a mobo issue? I mean, why would the whole computer freeze if the GPU is malfunctioning? Shouldn't it only cause graphical glitches? Then again I don't know how programs use the GPU's memory so it may be trivial that it would cause a complete freeze up.

Can you advise if this problem arose having upgraded to 1803 and if it wasn't present with 1709, for example?

Note: if you wished, you could try a clean install of 1709 just for comparison... if that works, then it's presumably not a hardware issue.

Build 1809 is now out, so another possible option.

Beyond that, you would need to analyse the problem. I have mentioned Windows Performance Recorder, but now you need to start a more analytical process.

Here are @zbook's typical initial instructions:

1) Update the specs in the "My Computer" section (see include...…. part below):

In the left corner below in your post you find 'My System Specs'.
After clicking it you can find a link a little below that says 'Update your System Spec', click on this link to get to the page where you can fill in your system specs.

Include PSU. cooler, case, peripherals and anything attached to the computer by wired or wireless (mouse, keyboard, headset, printer, xbox, USB wireless network card, etc.)

2) Run the BETA log collector and post a zip into this thread.
