Folder/file sort is driving me nuts

Now, I know my little issue is not too big of a deal but it's driving me batty because I'm a stickler for file and folder maintenance. Here's what I want but cannot accomplish. I want file explorer systemwide to sort with FOLDERS FIRST followed by files, all alphabetically. I somehow managed to get this result in my Documents folder by setting as follows:
    VIEW-Details
    Sort by -Name Ascending
    Group by -None
I then went to folder and search options and 'set as default'. However, my Downloads folder is still sorted alphabetically with files and folders all mixed together. So while in Downloads folder I set view options exactly like I did in Documents folder but nothing changed.
The weird thing is my Music and PICTURES folders have always sorted the way I want without me changing anything as do all the files and folders at root of C: and on any external device I plug in. It's only the Downloads folder that is contrary.
Has this got something to do with that update a year or so ago that changed the layout of the downloads folder to sort by date? That got on my nerves bad. Hope everyone has a safe and very Merry Christmas.

File/folder display in File Explorer has been shaky for decades.

Problems can arise when you keep multiple file types in the same folder.......for instance, jpegs and docs.

I don't think you can ever count on your choices to stick for years at a time. I run into sorting issues probably monthly, regardless of what I do.

Googling will probably lead you to registry fiddling.

I have fair luck by getting one folder the way I want it and then going to view/options/change folder and search options/view and then choosing "apply to folders". But it isn't foolproof, I suppose because Windows idea of "folders of this type" isn't clearcut.

Hi Paul,I didn't follow that post of Shawn's but it's exactly what I did. I thought (and still think) it must have something to do with "folder type" that it refers to in Shawn's post. I went so far as to change the folder type in downloads properties from 'general items' to 'documents' thinking that was the key but still didn't work. I find it interesting that it works like it is supposed to everywhere but in downloads.

OK, here's another interesting tidbit. Changing folder type for downloads folder from 'general item' to 'documents' will not stick so making the sort order I have for documents (which is correct) as the default sort order doesn't do any good.. Changing folder type appears to apply but I can go back to downloads properties and it's back to 'general items.' Something else, every single time I open downloads after a restart I have to re-sort to get that damned date sort out of there. GRRRRR!!! I guess I'll just give up even though it's hard for this stubborn old broad to accept it.

This fault is a known one. I fixed it, as did several others, by resetting folder views.

Hello Denis, I'm glad that worked for you but, sadly, not for me. Resetting the downloads to default folder view put the sort order back to "by date" which I hate. I was still unable to change folder type to 'documents' so that I could apply the documents template to the downs folder. I did however, manage to get 'downloads' back to where everything (files and folders) are sorted alphabetically but the folders are still mixed in with the files rather than folders being first and then files. By the way, I have another Windows 10 machine that everything sorts correctly except for the downloads folder...exactly like this one. Guess I'll just have to live with it. It's not a huge deal but having all this covid-19 downtime, I was determined to figure it out. Sometimes, the Microsoft gods are against us.

Denis I think I love you

Sorry, I did not run the bat file last night. I used Option 2 in that post since the downloads folder was the only one I had issues with. I did, however, run the bat file this morning. Nothing changed in my documents, pictures, music folders and downloads defaulted back to the 'sort by date' I hate so much. I was then able to set view by details, sort by name ascending, group by none and it sorted as I wanted.(screenshot). Thank you so much. You people on this forum have shared your knowledge and helped me more times than I can count. I truly appreciate all the work that you all do and the time you take to help out confused people like me. The Microsoft gods have blessed you. Merry Christmas.

And now this fault has gone - any folder you choose can be set to Documents/Music/Whatever type?
