    Thank you very much BlackKnightNick for this very helpful and long time needed post ;-)

    I've successfully installed Devices and Printers Metadata Authoring Wizard.
    However, when I launch it (right click on device -> create metadata package) I get an .Net Framework error 0x80070002. I can skip it and continue, but at the end, when clicking Finish, nothing is written in the specified location of my hdd.

    I've tried on a fresh installed windows 10, in virtualbox, and the same thing happened.

    It's not a big deal, I can live with these ugly icons

    have a nice day

    I got this to work using restorator 2007. I replaced the icons in the DDORes.dll file and used icofx 3.3 to make the icon files. The only file i couldn't change even though i did replace the file in the DDORes.dll file is the realtek speaker icon, anyone know how to change this one? I'm suspecting it is controlled by the realtek drivers. Just like my keyboard and mouse icons are controlled by the razer drivers.

    Hi, I know this is an old(ish) post, but I have tried this with several different images (all square), some png some jpg, some with transparency and some without, and at step 11 it always gives an error "transparency needs to be set" for image sizes 48x48, 32x32, 24x24 and 16x16. Maybe either ImageMagick or Icollator Forever have changed something or a step is missing. Can anyone help, or recommend another tool for creating the required icon file from an image.

    Many thanks in advance :)

    Hi, I'd be happy to retry the process and find where the issue is that you're seeing, just give me a couple hours to get off work first :)

    Also, would I be able to get the source image from you for the icon(s) you're trying to create before I start? I feel it would help a bit for troubleshooting.

    You could also be correct in there being the possibility that one (or both) of the apps had some sort of update and changed how they work, but I'm almost certain I still have the versions at the time of writing the original post in case you'd like to download my versions from a Google Drive share or something like that.

    Thanks!

    Many thanks for the quick reply, here is the url I downloaded one of the images from (the first one that I tried):

    There's no hurry to look at this, I'm happy to sort it out whenever you have time. Many thanks also for offering to share some older versions - I might take you up on that if it turns out that it is the new version that is broken.

    Does anyone have a link to download the tool? MS bundles it with WDK now. Would prefer to just have the tool.

    @babyblue

    I did a test-run on another one of my icons and it didn't throw any errors my way. It hasn't updated the icon yet, but it could just be since I haven't restarted my computer, or I did something else wrong on the way with Hardware IDs and such.

    Aside from that, it seems that the source image you found wasn't working for me either, so I googled around for another source of that image. I found one that had transparency already (yours made it look like it had transparency, but it didn't really. It was faking it with just a grid pattern, I have no clue what the reason was for that).

    I ran all of the commands and did everything except for the Authoring Wizard steps, so you can use this link to download all of the files needed (plus the steps along the way) and continue on Step 10.

    My method of finding images suitable for these types of icons is doing a google search, going to the "Images" tab, and clicking "Tools" > "Color" > "Transparent". This filters in all of the images that truly contain transparency, then click on any image and (very important: wait until the loading bar below the image goes away) then right-click the image, and select "Open image in new tab". Click the tab that just opened, and use Ctrl+S, making sure the filetype is PNG.

    Hope this helped!

    Microsoft no longer seems to host this at the link given earlier, but I managed to snag a copy from the wayback machine:

    @Raiderman

    Yup! I'll edit the main post to include a Google Drive shared folder link with all of the tools necessary, each using the exact version I used during the time of writing the instructions.

    Here's the link:

    Ahh, so it looks like I was just unlucky with my picks of images. The icon you have in the zip file worked perfectly thank you. I did try to add transparency using irfanview for some but got the same error. I'll try the method of using google to find images with true transparency, thanks for the idea :)
