Still, killing nage screens, and picking away at custom customizations. About the only good thing I can say is, it's been a while since i last had to do this.

I have had my Raspberry Pi 5/8GB since December 8. I boot using a 64GB USB flash drive.

Sometimes I like to use the RealVNC viewer to connect to my Pis. Unfortunately, it doesn't work with the new Bookworm OS for the Pi. However, there is a workaround. To get it to work I have to switch from Wayland to the X11 mode. I will use that until there is a RealVNC viewer that does work with Wayland.

Pi OS 12 Bookworm, has really shaken things up, software wise. And you have no choice but to run it on a Pi 5. Fingers crossed mine ships any day now.

Where did you order the Pi 5 from, when did you order it, and when do you expect to get it?

I just happened to find out about the Pi 5 on the day it launched September 28, 2023. I pre-ordered the Pi 5, official P/S, and official red/white case the same day as that. I didn't get it until December 5.

BTW, when I place my order, it was only supposed to take 4-6 weeks. That turned in until almost 10 weeks. Keeping my fingers crossed didn't help.

The order took so long for two reasons:
    1. Most of the first shipment went to people that paid for subscriptions to either The MagPi or Hackspace magazines. I was unlucky that PiShop.us was designated as the seller handling distributions to these magazine subscribers in North America. I had to get in line after them.
    2. PiShop.us didn't ship partial shipments. The order was held up for at least two weeks waiting for the official red/white case.

I ordred mine from Pimoroni on Nov 5th. I didn't have the cash on launch day. I'm in Batch 2 of their Pre-orders, which are shipping any day now. It just depends on where I am in the que.
I ordered an 8GB Pi 5, Official Cooler, Pibow Ninja case, power supply, HDMI cables etc. I also have the NVMe base with 500 GB SSD on Pre-order that is also shipping any day now.

What a PITA Windows is for getting it how You want it.
Anyway, a reinstall was long over due. Now to put the SSD I swapped out to good use.
I think I'll set it up as the boot drive on my Pi 400. It's already all set up hardware wise, with a monitor, keyboard and mouse.

I still can't decide if I am going to do my status display in Python or C++. You would not believe how hard it is to find the libraries to program graphics in C++. I finally found the Vulkan libraries and they work with Bookworm, but gee whiz, what a search process. And there is almost no documentation on these libraries. It looks like everybody is doing this kind of thing in Python. I might have to do it in Python if I can't get this figured out. Problem is that my Python skills are rather weak.

I did find out something really nice though. Visual Studio Code will let you remotely execute the code you are writing on your Pi. So you can program with your PC with a good environment and then debug on the Pi. I have the instructions linked if anyone wants them, just let me know and I will post them.

I code from my PC and or Pi using the Thonny IDE. As we know the code is run on the actual Micro Controller. I never knew you could do the same thing with a Pi though?
My brother in law is big on VS coding. He worked for the Canadian Government coding up GUI type stuff for them. I have zero skills with VS.
There was something Microsoft put out for a Raspberry Pi that was VS studio based. Dammed if I can remember what it was though? Very limited and I struggled to get anywhere, and just gave up. I would have pushed on but it wasn't what I thought it was when I went down that road.

Python was the go to for Raspberry Pi stuff when I bought my first one, so that's what I learned to use. And most of my add on displays are Pimoroni SPI Breakout Garden so I go with their drivers.

Being a glutton for punishment, I went back to an SSD on my Desktop PC, and one again reinstalled Windows 10 from scratch. I bought a bigger better faster SSD. The other one had been formatted anyway.

The "Video" SATA drive ended up being slower than a standard SATA Spinner drive. It's optimized for sequential read / writes and sucks at random read / writes. Not what you want for your OS drive. It will make a good drive for doing backups, once I buy a nice USB 3 or USB C enclosure for it.
