Blue Screen & Your 'Device Ran Into A Problem' - What's Up With My PC?

Few days ago my Acer Aspire desktop started playing up. When using my browser (my pc mostly gets used for internet) a blue screen with sad face telling me my "device has run into a problem". The blue screen would either stay on screen and my pc wouldn't respond to anything, or sometimes it would turn the pc off. Sometimes I could turn the pc on, but it wouldn't go through start up, other times it would be difficult to even get the pc to turn on.

It seems that if I leave the pc for some time (always more likely to start and work if left for some time) - an hour or more - it would turn on and go through start up and actually let me use it. I may then be able to use the pc for a few minutes or several hours before the blue screen appears again and the pc either doesn't respond or turns itself off. Leaving the pc for some time before it actually starts working again is almost like it needs that time to cool down.

On the blue screen there is a 'Stop Code' at the bottom of the text that often gives different reasons. Sometimes it's 'video scheduler internal error', or 'DPC watchdog violation' or something about a security kernel problem. My pc knowledge is basic - I have no idea what these things mean.

Anyway, just to add to my confusion, the problem hasn't appeared for the last two days and has worked perfectly. Can anyone tell me what's going on with my pc please?
