    Windows Update Service Disabled

I couldn't update a Windows 10 20H2 system as the WIndows Update Service was Disabled, and I couldn't reenable it.

I did a full in place update to 22H2 which appeared to work but Windows Update Service is still Disabled. If I set it to Automatic, it doesn't stick it reverts to Disabled immediately.

    sfc /scannow is clean

    Help!

    Thanks David

    Hello David,

You could see if resetting Windows Update below may help. It will reset the services, policies, and registry entries for Windows Update back to default.

    Hello @perdrix,

Have you made ANY changes to Windows Update via a .bat file, .ps1 file , .reg file, or ANY third-party software ?

    Not knowingly!

I ran the batch file and it flashed up some errors, but the reboot message hid them. It didn't work so I wrote the output to a log file:

As a test, download and merge the REG file for the Windows Update service in the tutorial below to restore it back to default to hopefully fix it.

Well darn it! I didn't put it there, but I found StopUpdates10 Guard running as a Service.

I disabled the **** thing and now Windows Update loads OK.

Installed Revo Uninstaller Pro and its Log Database to get rid of it.

    Thanks for the help folks

    Hello @perdrix,

How can I totally remove the darned thing?
    You could try this . . .

     Revo Uninstaller - FREE

    About Revo Uninstaller - FREE:

The Uninstaller module is Revo Uninstaller ‘s primary feature for situations when a program won’t uninstall normally or when you have some doubts that a program has not been uninstalled completely.

Also when a program is uninstalled, often times there are multiple files, folders, and/or Registry entries left on your system, which can cause various issues if not removed. This happens more frequently than you might think.

Revo Uninstaller acts as both a replacement and a supplement to the built-in functionality in Windows by first running the built-in uninstaller for the program, and then scanning for leftover data afterwards, making it your best choice when it comes to completely remove stubborn programs, temporary files, and other unnecessary program data that is left behind after the standard uninstall process.

Revo Uninstaller now has the ability to delete Microsoft Apps - under its own Tab.

I find that when uninstalling software, Revo Uninstaller [ FREE ] is excellent. It has an option to Scan for leftover items after the initial uninstall [ using the software own uninstall process if one exists ] using an Advanced Scan option.

Here is some additional detailed information that is very nicely explaind by our Forum member @idgat . . .

    I hope this helps.
