Good read. I'm using the Acronis that Western Digital link provided to Acronis because WD does not support their own backup software anymore. Not to happy with Acronis either, or maybe last night it was fighting windows update? I`ll try Acronis on a simple test to back up just my word, pdf, files and see how it does before I try something else.

Update: No problems backing up Documents 1.22gb with no files left out.

I don't know any details of the new WD Edition Acronis other than that people have told me it's only a 5 year licence [which is fairly limited for a backup scheme].

I had both WD Edition Acronis & Seagate's equivalent Acronis utility [DiscWizard] but have gradually switched over to just Seagate's as I have changed disks over time. I have a Samsung-Seagate internal/USB disk in each computer now.
These free editions can only image whole drives not selected folders.
These free editions can only image & restore if one of their branded disks is connected [internal / by USB / USB flash drives / some other types but not SD cards] despite what their operating instructions sometimes say.
The requirement to have a Samsung-Seagate disk somewhere in the computer for running DiscWizard is not too onerous because my backup drives are also Seagate so, when I connect them by USB to do the image, that connection alone would be enough to authorise DiscWizard to run. But that can get awkward when booting from their boot USB to restore an image.

I just had a defective Samsung disk in my Chuwi Hi10 Pro small laptop [actually, it's a tablet with its own integrated keyboard so it looks like a small laptop]. Its "big" disk was a USB-connected Samsung 256GB USB flash drive and it failed about a month ago.
    - It was four years old with a five year warranty.
    - I still had the Samsung 128GB USB that had preceded it so I've put that back in and temporarily have to accept that I cannot store everything that I normally do on there.
    - I found it unbelievable that they agreed to honour the 5 year warranty but that I had to pay the non-refundable postage to the Netherlands [£9 ≅ $11] before they would send a replacement because they've subcontracted all USB distribution to a firm there.
    - The duff USB has been sitting in Netherlands customs clearance for a fortnight.
    - I nosed around the Samsung website and found a link to their CEO so I complained about having to pay. That office responded very quickly and they have already repaid me the non-refundable postage. I had hoped to stir them up onto resolving this for all users but I don't think they have changed their system yet. I'll wait a month then ask them how the reorganisation is progressing.
For the interim period at least, I've installed Macrium Reflect and I've been using that to make system images because I wasn't sure if I would stick to Samsung-Seagate.
    - Perhaps I'll alternate Macrium / Acronis in the future and accept that I'll have to keep both installed all the time & have two boot disks ready for emergencies.
    - Perhaps I'll get used to Macrium so much that I decide to bin Acronis completely, use Macrium all the time and have a free choice of which branded disks to get in the future.

    All the best,
    Denis

Yep, 5-year License. Samsung is notorious for failing after 4-5years. I have 2 HP Stream laptops that I bought for my Granddaughters online school 2 years ago. No drive space, but it worked for their online work. Now they are back in brick and mortar, these are obsolete, as if they were also back then. Have to clear space for all windows update just about. But they still work for them and what they need to do. Still have our old Gateway laptop with Vista on it. I use it only for games from discs. I used a 32 GB flash drive to transfer all files from it back in 2014. It took a while!

I`ll use Acronis, and try Macrium as well. Then again I might go with a cloud based back up system after this one expires.

    Since you've tried resetting WU
    and
running the update troubleshooter, I think [Settings, Update, Troubleshoot, Additional troubleshooters]
    then,
since you mention their limited space,
you can connect a USB with, say, 16GB free space and WU will make use of it to be able to run.

But, if I've understood you correctly, your main problem is not with these small computers but your main one.

Yes, My Lenovo PC. And yes I need to use an external hard drive or card to update their computers. It`s been like that for awhile I guess. Checked them yesterday and need to update to 20H2, way out of date!

Well finally fixed the update problem, I tried a lot of fixes, Command Prompts, Media Creation tool, Resetting PC, etc.... but only one thing worked for me.
Uninstalled KB5003791 21H2, with the intention of using Windows 10 Update Assistant to update it to the latest version of Windows 10. You might want to download CCLeaner first for its registry cleaner. Never before have I saw that much registry show up in the cleaner. After I uninstalled KB5003791 and restarted PC was slow and chaotic. Only after running registry cleaner and restarting it did come back to normal. Anyway----
    1. Uninstall KB5003791 and restart PC.
    2. Depending on how crazy or slow your PC is acting, you might want to run the Registry Cleaner. Save the deleted registry entries to a flash drive in case you need it. Then restart!
    3. Go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10 and click on "Update Now" Click "Open" on the downloaded file.
    4. Follow instructions in Updating Your PC to the latest Version of Windows 10.
    5. Plan on it taking about 3-5+ hours to update. Don`t shut the power off! let it spin!
    6. When installed, go to Windows Update in Settings and Search for Updates. Should be 1 Defender, 2 Net frameworks, 1 KB4023057 which will install and disappear, then the big one is KB5012599. Let the Net frame works install until they both require restart. Let KB5012599 finish downloading, and start installing. Mine was about 21% installed.
    7. At this point click on Restart, It will began updating all 3 KB`s.
    8. Another 2-4 hours. Be patient, do not turn off your power! Let it spin!

    9. End Result, The Latest Edition of Windows 10

I'm glad it's resolved. A Repair install would also have achieved that result so do note the tutorial link for future reference.

If the {reset WU} tutorial procedure does not fix your WU then I suggest a Repair install [using the current Version's ISO file] because that is an effective repair method that should not affect your own files or your installed applications.

I did try that. I did not make an ISO file. But I downloaded the Create Windows 10 installation media tool, and opened it from there. Did everything in your video I watched, except it never restarted thru the process all the way up to 78%. And it sat there for 5 hours. So I canceled. Maybe the ISO file would have made a difference??

Now I have a Black X on my Settings icon when I uninstalled 21H2. And remains there even after a successful reinstall of 21H2.

Microsoft rep wanted to do a repair with an ISO file, but I didn`t have time last night. And we both came to the conclusion that sense it is not affecting access to settings, it`s just a mild corrupt file.

But will have to do a repair to fix it.

I saw your thread about your icon issue.
I think other people there gave you a link to clearing out the icon cache but it made no difference.
I cannot understand how a reinstallation failed to fix that icon problem. Since a Repair install*** is no better than a reinstallation, I don't expect that to help.
[*** "a repair with an ISO file"]
And running a Repair install can also be done by booting Windows normally then running the setup.exe on that Installation USB you made. I don't know why it should freeze at 78%; if the USB was faulty, I would have expected it to fail straightaway.
I generally run Repair installs from the ISO merely because a copy is already on my computer ready for use. I have never heard the suggestion that it is any more reliable than running it from an Installation USB.

I never watch any videos attached to tutorials so I don't know what's in the one you saw. I prefer the [written] tutorials themselves so I can scroll up & down to re-check what I've just done or check what I'm about to do.

So I am afraid that I do not know how to fix your icon problem.
And I don't know how it has persisted through the repairs you have already tried.

I've just noticed that your other thread has no reference to a reinstall.
    - If you have already reinstalled then I agree that you might as well just grin & bear it.
    - If you have not reinstalled then a Repair install ["a repair with an ISO file"] might fix it.
