    License Key

My son just upgraded his computer (new MB, new CPU, new GPU). He had a legitimate Win7 license (not OEM) and got the free upgrade to Win10. However, now Windows is asking for a new license. I used Belarc Advisor to retrieve the license but it was wiped. I don't have the Win7 license anymore. Is there any way to reactivate Windows without having to purchase a new license?

You probably can do it using the Windows Activation Troubleshooter. Use Activation Troubleshooter in Windows 10

Not sure what else to try if you have lost the 7 license key.

Call Microsoft and explain to them what you did. They will typically activate the machine for you over the phone.

The Win7 key can only be retrieved if Win7 was an in-place upgrade - or if that install was backed up.

If Win 10 was clean installed with the Win 7 key, unfortunately it morphed into a digital licence and the key got lost in translation.
