Window updates service failed + network & internet settings crashes

I recently have an issue with window update services. It shows the reason as below:

We couldn't connect to the update service. We'll try again later, or you can check now. If it still doesn't work, make sure you're connected to the Internet

Also, when I tried to open the network and internet settings page, it just crashes. I did a installation media and it didn't seem to work. Other than a clean install are there any other options which may worth a shot?

I did a installation media and it didn't seem to work
I know what installation media is - but what did YOU do with it

Hello you need Windows ISO file regardless if you plan clean installation or not, if you have it mount it in Windows explorer by right clicking on ISO file.

Assuming you mounted Windows ISO file to example X:\Windows drive next step is to open command prompt as Administrator and run:

    Code:
    dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:X:\sources\SxS\ /LimitAccess
Update path in above command to point to SxS folder within mounted Windows ISO

    Reboot as needed then run:
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    Again reboot if needed.

I used the tool to do an reinstallation of windows 10 to my laptop. I chose the option to keep all my files and app.

Do I presume correctly that you can connect to the internet and browse ok without a problem
even although the attempt to open network and internet settings page fails

You know that there are only optional packages in the path x:\sources\SxS\ on an installation medium?

No hate, I only ask because I don't see the point in referring to this path.

Yeah you're right, thanks for pointing that out!

I did quick read before posting HERE and it looks like those quotes confused me:

You can use a mounted Windows image from a WIM file as a source to restore optional features and repair a corrupted operating system.
You can use a Windows side-by-side folder from a network share or from a removable media, such as the Windows DVD, as the source of the files. For example, z:\sources\SxS.
So the path should be WIM file or just sources directory? I guess one of these 2 should do...

    Code:
    dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:X:\ISO-FILE\sources\install.wim \ /LimitAccess
    Code:
    dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:X:\ISO-FILE\sources /LimitAccess

    @zebal

The best option is to mount the Windows image and then point to the directory.
You can find an example there:

    Can'''t install updates : Windows10

I think the problem is probably in the registry regarding the network adapter. If you have already performed an in-place upgrade and the error persists, I don't think the problem is bad system files unless there is a problem with your hard drive.

You can still execute the following commands and report back what you get as a result.

    dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

    and then sfc /scannow

Thanks, very useful, I'm bookmarking your solution! although DISM command may fail without local source if update agent doesn't function.

OP, if you want to give it a try you may need to figure out index number:
