When you see the message "Pending Download" the system is waiting for you to click on the download button to initiate the downloads. Once you do this the downloads will commence. After this stage you may see the "Pending Installation" notice and the system will be waiting for you to initiate the install by clicking on Install Now. After this stage you will see a message that you need to Restart and you will have the option to Restart Now or Schedule a time for the restart when it may be more convenient.

    Hope this helps.

Unfortunately there is nothing to click once it displays pending download for each of the 5 updates.
Running the script will change pending download to updates available.
The clicking works and it again displays pending download.
Then it does not change after reboots or waiting....it is stuck on pending download despite any other steps.

Most of the updates that were successful dated 01/30/2021 were possible by manual or other troubleshooting steps.
The remaining 5 were not able to be fixed.

Do you have any restrictions set for downloads on your network? For example in advanced options do you have the metered network selected to allow downloads if your internet connection is metered.

A metered connection had never been used until recently.
It was recently switched as a trial and error troubleshooting step.
So far there has been no change.

Sorry I'm not clear from your answer: is the setting ON or OFF?
It needs to be ON if your system thinks the connection is metered.

The metered connection I had never used.
As a trial and error step a metered connection is currently on.

Ok. After a reboot - try the windows updates again and see if they continue to download.

Did you set connections as metered via a Registry hack? If so, you might see something like the following:

There was a script from Technet that was used multiple times that reset the Windows update components.
FYI: That project is now here:

Reset Windows Update Tool - Troubleshooting for Windows Update

GitHub - ManuelGil/Script-Reset-Windows-Update-Tool: This script reset the Windows Update Components.

From memory (because I have not used it in a while)

Launch in safe mode, run as admin and choose option to reset registry settings. (Option 11)

Boot as normal (but with no internet connection) and choose option to reset WU components. (Option 2)

    Reboot (with internet connection)

Check windows update settings (via windows settings app) and reapply if neccessary.

Reboot (with internet connection) and wait 5 to 10 minutes to see if an update check runs.

If it doesn't - run the tool again (Option 2) and reboot.

The computer was rebooted many times in the troubleshooting process.
So far reboots have not fixed these 5 failed updates.
