This is what I've done to date.

1- downloaded the update reset batchfile from the source given, and run it.
    2-immediately rebooted the machine
3-downloaded the relevant ssu, although this is listed as installed in Control Panel > Programs. Running that msu confirms that it's already on the system.
4-downloaded the KB4598242 msu from Microsoft, and run it. It started Ok but failed with the same error 0x8007000D
5-checked with sfc /scannow - no problems reported.

In other words, I've stepped through the suggested processes, but still end up with the update failing to install, and with the same error as when update attempted through WU.

I may try the whole process over again, before attempting anything else.

Either investigate or run a Repair install. I would choose the Repair install.

    Denis,

    Thanks.

I'll give update another try, with a couple of things changed, and if that doesn't work, a repair Install.

Looking at the EV, the last WU error gave the code as 0x8024200b, rather than the 0x8007000D which appears in all the preceding WU errors in the EV.

You could try Troubleshoot problems updating Windows 10 - MSSupport or just search online for the new error code.

    Best of luck,

    Denis,

Went for a repair install, which was a puzzle in itself. I didn't have KB4586853 installed (supposedly a prerequisite), and this was rejected when trying to install it from msu file. Anyway, downloaded the iso and installed from there, and it seems OK, with my apps and folders there. The build has regressed from 19042.635 back to 19042.631, so who knows what happens next.

DISM (which previously indicated problems) and SFC (which did not) both report OK.

I shall be doing a couple of image backups before I invoke WU, and will see what happens then. I guess there will be several, as the SSU KB4598481 is no longer listed and there will probably be others.

Thanks again for your help with this. I'll close it off once I've had a go at the updates.

    All the best.

Where did you get that from?

There are no prerequisites for a Repair install. The only limitation is that you will only get the option to keep your apps & data if you use the ISO for your current or a newer Windows Version.

The build has regressed from 19042.635 back to 19042.631, so who knows what happens next.
You have reverted to the build number of the ISO itself. That's normal.

There's no need to wait for WU. You've got them already so just install the SSU & CU.

    Denis,

The Repair Install thing is on the first page of the instructions in the Forum here Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

and reads "If you have Windows 10 version 20H2 installed, then it is required to have KB4586853 for build 19042.662 or higher installed to be able to do a repair install and keep everything.". Perhaps I misunderstand this, but the build I had was per winver 19042.685. There is also some discussion in the 100+ pages there, where people haven't had this and haven't been offered the "save files and apps" option on the install. As I didn't have it and couldn't install it, I mounted the iso, was offered the apps/files options, and went on from there.

I'll sort out my image backups and then proceed with the updates. I need to have a look at it again, but I think that there might have been an update or two (besides the SSU one), and other than the one causing problems, which are no longer listed as Installed. I guess it will sort itself out.

Out of interest, will updates installed via msu cause problems if they are installed out of issued chronological sequence (obviously they depend also on the content one to the other)?

OK. I know what that is [I was thrown by "prerequisite" as I didn't think about it that way]. Your build was previously .685 so that problem did not affect you. Once you have done the SSU & CU, it will not affect you either.

There is never a problem doing the latest SSU & CU. There is no chronological constraint.

There might well be some other, small updates later on as WU finds them but they will not be affected by the latest SSU & CU having been done first.

    Denis,

SSU and KB4598242 are now installed and showing up in Update History. Phew!

That's been an interesting and worthwhile voyage of discovery, with plenty of information for future reference; although I hope I don't have to use it too often.

Many thanks for your help and assistance, plus patience.

    Regards,
    Peter

    Peter,

I'm glad it has worked out.

Does your username indicate your preferred browser or your preferred casserole?

I've just skimmed back through the thread to check for any other issues that arose but can't see any so that's it then.

Macrium Reflect is often recommended in this forum for making system images. Other utilities are available but this one is so commonplace that you can get plenty of help for it.

    Macrium Software Macrium Reflect Free
    Macrium USB - TenForums
Macrium Reflect KnowledgeBase - user guide [version-independent link]

It can also make bootable system images. This facility is called viBoot and it requires Win10 Pro.

While you're thinking about backups, consider Backup and Restore Device Drivers - TenForumsTutorials as well.
