Windows Update problem with Windows Update MiniTool

    Hello everybody!
    Here is my problem...

I have disabled Automatic Windows Update using the Local Group Policy Editor.
Instead, I use Windows Update mini tool. I run it every two weeks and I choose what to install and what not.
After months of doing the job fine, today something odd is happening.
When I run the Tool I get error message Windows update service required (photo 1).
I click ''Yes" and a message Windows Update Service enabled appears.
Then I press Check for Updates but after a few seconds of looking for updates, another error comes up An error has occurred: 0x80070422 The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it (photo 2).

    Any idea?

Hi, this will happen as you are using two different methods, and WUMT will not override your group policy setting.

I use Sledgehammer, which, like your group policy option, disables WU thoroughly. If I try to run WUMT directly, I see the same message as you. Before doing that I have to let Sledgehammer remove its blocks.

Consider using WUMT alone to disable Windows Update, or Windows Update Manager (WUmgr) which also has an option to disable WU,

or the tool in option 7 here:

    Thanks for the answer!

I enabled automatic update via Group Policy and run WUMT but I got the same error. I tried to make manual update but I got this error...

Then I checked Control Panel>Administrative tools>Services. It seems that Windows Update Service is disabled and worst of all I can't start it. The "Start" in the right click drop menu is faded.

    What's going on...???

You can try the Windows Update Troubleshooter- post a screenshot of what it reports, including any detailed results.

Have you disabled WU by any other means, and have you tried restarting your PC?

When was WU last working normally?

Group policy- do you see any red messages of the form
Some settings are managed by your organisation

    Still problems? Try
Reset Windows Update in Windows 10

    Still problems? Try
Tweaking.com's free repair tool- select only the relevant repair for W Update.

    - Troubleshooting report

    - I disabled WU once, few months ago with Group Policy Editor. Since then, EUMT was working without problems till today. Last time was about 15-20 days ago.

    - I don't see messages like see any red messages like ''Some settings are managed by your organisation''.
This message was at the Windows Update tab of the Settings but since I changed it today, there isn't anymore.

    - After reset Windows Update (with .bat file) the only thing that changed was WUMT error message.
    Now the error is 0x8024001e.

    - I used Tweaking.com's free repair tool but nothing changed.
The WUMT error is again 0x80070422

    Thank you for your reply.

Assuming your disk is good and file system intact (check them using e.g. Hard Disk Sentinel - trial- SSDs too, Crystal Disk info, and run chkdsk c: /scan from an admin command or Power Shell prompt, and likewise SFC /SCANNOW), that leaves performing an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all progs and data.

You need an iso file of the same build as you have installed -1909, or you could use a bootable disk of the same build. Log in first, run setup.exe from the mounted iso file or the bootable disk.
To get a 1909 iso file see the relevant tutorial- one method mentioned there is the Heidoc iso downloader (free, via Google)

Ok, are you sure the DVD is for 1909?

As a matter of fact, I'm not. This should be a problem?

To perform an in-place upgrade repair install, as I said, you need an iso file of the same build as you have installed -1909, or you could use a bootable disk of the same build.

You cannot use an older build to do this.
If you use a later major build, you upgrade to that build.

For more, if you wish, please see the lengthy tutorial on in-place upgrade repair.
