    Perfect.

Once done it is time to clean install.

    Clean Install Windows 10

Your neighbour will have a nice product to move forward on. Once the machine is all set up I would recommend you use a tool like Macrium to image device. Make and test boot Macrium boot media. With this image you will be able to quickly restore the machine.

If reset save files fails there are two remaining options:
reset save files equivalent and clean install
If you have already backed up files then you can clean install: reinstall drivers and applications and recover files

Made a Windows 10 x64 (1903) installation DVD and used it to reinstall windows on the PC (it kept the previous OS in a windows.old folder).

Installation worked fine and it reported the version installed was Windows 10 Home and that it had been activated.

I had expected Windows 10 Pro to have been installed as I had bought a Windows 10 Pro upgrade product key for the PC back in January 2018!

Entered the upgrade product key and it was accepted and the PC started to install updates.

When the upgrade had completed Windows reported the version as Windows 10 Enterprise but it had not been activated!!

    Tried activation but it failed.

Any ideas what I can do?

On a hunch, in 'Change product key' I re-entered the Windows 10 Pro upgrade product key.

A few seconds later it changed the Windows edition to 'Windows 10 Pro' and reported 'Windows is activated with a digital key'!!

So I have got there at last!

I have just created a Recovery Drive for my neighbour's PC. Also, I will look into creating an image using Macrium Reflect Free.

    Thanks everyone for your help.

    Regards

    Excellent.

You may have bought Pro but the BIOS contains a Home key. You got around it but there are other ways during the install.

With your Macrium Image you really won't care, you will restore and go.

By the way, did the USB ports start working?

    Yes they did!

The USB driver in Windows must have become corrupted.

BTW, I have now made a Macrium image of the PC.
