Failing to update windows 10 (1803 Update). Error 0x800706ba

I receive this error when trying to update manually: 0x800706ba

'm using Windows 10 on an MSI laptop (only a few days old).

Furthermore, I cannot install ANY applications on my laptop right now.

Even the most basic applications like Steam, Telegram, etc.

Hello Tom, and welcome to Ten Forums.

That error is usually associated with the DHCP client service not running.

Double check using the tutorial below to make sure that the DHCP client service is enabled, running, and set to "Automatic".

Thanks for the welcome and suggestion.

I have just opened my "Services" based off the tutorial you linked. DHCP client's Status is "Running" and Startup Type is "Automatic".

Is there anything more I need to do?

If you like, you could see if resetting Windows Update may help. That usually helps with most Windows Update issues.

    - has this been the case from the beginning, or has the problem developed since you bought it?

What build of Windows 10 did it come with?
    Windows key + R, winver

If all else fails, you may have a manufacturer's recovery partition to fall back on, assuming you bought it complete with an OS and not as a barebones system.

    Please confirm which. Thanks.

I downloaded and ran the .BAT file (was nothing to UNBLOCK), and restarted. I've started the windows update again; this time it's stuck at "Awaiting Install". Will edit/update soon if the status changes

It developed since I bought it, it only happened approx 24ago. Originally I downloaded a game (Diablo II) and Telegram desktop. I used them for two days and then suddenly they both stopped working (started crashing upon opening). I uninstalled both and tried to reinstall them, both came up with individual errors when trying to reinstall them. Then I started trying other applications, and I realized I can't install anything without an error or crash report (including the windows update).

Version 1709 (OS Build 16299.666). It came complete with the laptop.

I just tried both BM Collector and Beta Log Collector - no success.

When I ran the original DM Collector tool after successfully downloading and extracting:
Midway though the collection I got a popup notification "Microsoft console based script host has stopped working". I tried reinstalling and running again, but with the same result. Consequently, the file at the end was empty both times and there was nothing to extract.

When I ran beta log collector v2-beta15 after succesfully downloading and extracting:
I ran "log collector" and it instantly closes the black window that pops up (stays open for less than a second). Also result in no log file.

    1) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    2) sfc /scannow
    3) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    4) chkdsk /scan
    5) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

    6) See if any of the steps in this link are useful in running the beta log collector: (post #5)

You might try system restore, if you have enabled that, as your problem has occurred so recently.
And rather than spend days trying to fix this, do a factory reset.

    Or clean install 1803.

    A key strategy is to
    a. Start using disk imaging routinely as early as you can- before something goes badly wrong.
(Macrium Reflect (free) + external storage for disk image sets)
    b. Configure your system and keep simple notes
    c. Create a new differential disk image - 'update' your disk image set- after a number of successful changes

    Repeat (b) and (c)

Then when sthg goes wrong, in many cases you can restore a disk image - without technical help- and be back with a working PC- works even if you have to replace the disk.
