Update 1803 installs twice

When I do an upgrade to Win10, I delay setting up the network. Then I go to System, plug in the ethernet cable, click on Activate, and as soon as Win10 is activated I pull the ethernet cable.

That routine is because I have a local copy of update 1893, all 772MB of it, that I use in order to preclude a huge repetitive download. Then, after 1803 is installed and the machine has rebooted, I plug ethernet back in and do Updates.

It is frustrating, after all that, to see Microsoft insist on redownloading and reinstalling 1803. And there is nothing I know to do to stop this waste. Either it did an update evaluation during the 17/billionths of a second the machine was online activating, or it is ignoring the currently existing update.

Hi, are you sure that what is downloading isn't an update? What is the exact build of your iso/boot disk?
(If unsure there are tutorials to help you find out).

Put another way, have you compared your build number before and after this 'second installation'?

It is normal to expect an update after installing a build, unless that build is already up to date.

Hi,
Irrespective of the install build, should not installing a local 1803 update preclude downloading the online 1803 update? Or do I misunderstand you?

1) In the left lower corner search type: windows update
2) run windows updates > post an image into the thread
3) click view update history > post an image into the thread
4) click on uninstall updates > post an image into the thread

PrtScr doesn't seem to work on that machine. But I ran WU and it installed a Win Defender update, then said I was up to date. The Check for Updates link then disappeared. Installed Updates listed only two updates, including only one instance of 1803 (kb 4343909). Uninstall updates listed only one instance of kb4343909 as well. I guess I'm going to have to do this routine next time after the local install and before connecting to the MS server, to verify the update actually is registered. There was no error message however.

KB4343909 is the latest cumulative update for 1803, OS Build 17134.228, released August 14.

I suspect what happened is that you upgraded to 1803 with the install media (this would be either 17134.1 or 17134,122, depending on how recently you downloaded it). Then you installed a standalone update for 1803. This may or may not have been the latest one, the os build number in Winver would tell you.The current build is 17134,228.

If the update you installed was not the latest build, then KB4343909 would have been downloaded to bring you up to date. But it would not have downloaded the whole 700+ MB all over again, only those parts of the update not already installed would have been downloaded..

A ha. I didn't realize that the update has its own versioning. The one I downloaded was earlier this week, but perhaps there has been an update to the update since then - yes, I see by your date there was.

And it's good to know that the secondary download is incremental. I won't worry about it so much, and will update my local copy occasionally.

Yes, the major build number 17134 indicates this is the 'April 2018 Update, version 1803'. That never changes, but the minor build number goes up each time there's a cumulative update. Currently that's .228, this time last month it was .165. Run Winver to see yours.

The major build number will change when version 1809 is released some time in October. The version number is the date the features for the next version were finalized, 1803 means 2018, 3rd month.

BTW, I see the "Delta" update of 1803 available, at ~400MB for x64. I suppose I will run that after the Cumulative 1803 u/d, before going online for the server updates.

A Cumulative Update is ALL updates since 1803 was released, so it doesn't matter what (if any) update you had before you install it. As I said before, only those parts of the package you do not already have will actually be downloaded.

Delta Updates tend to be smaller because they only contain this month's changes, they require you to have already updated to the previous cumulative update else they will not install.
