I don't understand what kind of control you're looking for.Pyramid talks about disabling updates. Maybe disabling is different than turning off, because I've learned with Windows 10 Home, you don't have update control other than allowing when to restart.
Windows Update service has several settings. 'Disable' is one of them. With that set, one can use one's PC merrily through the four weeks until Patch Tuesday occurs. Then one gets and stays informed about the update that is offered and available. Is it problematic for some users? Is it smooth sailing otherwise? I pick the time to do the update. It could be weeks after Patch Tuesday. I could download the update, set the Update service to Manual and install the update. Or I could set the Update service to manual and run Update. In my book, that is control.
Having upgraded to 1709 16299.125, I hesitated in doing the manual update to .192. The mitigation was already done while the PC was on 1607. Maybe the Cumulative Update that may come out in two weeks will finalize the issue.
