Maybe is bad question... but..... Is the upgrade to Win 10 still possible after that particular Harddrive has been reformatted or that desktop ?

I have now marked this thread as solved. Unless anybody can demonstrate that WhyMe and NavyLCDR are incorrect in their clear and unambiguous assertions then I regard the matter as closed. I'm sure the argument will continue on but I'm happy enough that I now know where I stand. Thanks to all those who have taken the time to share their knowledge.
Yes and maybe are the two answers.
First you asked UPGRADE. Upgrade means install and activate a previous Windows 7 or 8/8.1 and upgrade that to Windows 10. Until July 29, 2016 you most certainly can do that for free. After July 28, 2016 it is pretty grey if you will be able to do that upgrade for free regardless of if you have done it before or not - but after you have done one upgrade, there is no need to do an upgrade again because -
After you have done one upgrade on the computer, you can reformat the hard drive - delete all the partitions - clean it - whatever you want - and install Windows 10 fresh onto it without doing a second upgrade process. You can even replace some components that might fail like the hard drive and still be able to freshly install Windows 10 and it will activate. If you change some components and it doesn't activate online, call Microsoft and explain it to them and they might accommodate activating it for you.
You should be able to. Since drive upgrades are quite common... I imagine the only iffy big hardware change would be the motherboard... but who knows for sure.
It'd suck to get more RAM then have to buy Windows 10 again. Sometimes I think it'd be easy just to splurge and get a retail copy instead of OEM system builder copies.
Not much to it really... anyone with Windows 7 and/or 8/8.1 can upgrade to Windows 10 for free within the first year of release... it won't illegal copies genuine, but if you have a genuine copy installed, you're good to go. You can even do a clean install afterward, but you must upgrade first.
Had to clean install my dad's computer after upgrading, due to a problem with VLC and other programs, clean install went great, it reactivated without a problem and VLC, etc. work fine now.
