Hello, I have been helping out a friend with an HP Pavilion X360 laptop.
After 1607 update was OK on 11/10/16, Updates KB3194798, KB3199986, and KB3197954 failed to install on 24/10/16.
I managed to download a CAB copy of KB3194798, and used the Offline Installer to install it successfully.
The system then downloaded more updates, and installed KB3199986, and KB3200970, bringing the WINVER to 1493.447.
However, I still see cumulative update KB3197954 did not get retried or re-installed. I did see that KB3197954 is
supposed to replace KB3194798, and that it is in the Windows 10 Update History page
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...update-history
showing that it brings the OS level to 14393.351.
Am I safe to download KB3197954 from the update catalogue and install it, or has it been actually superceded by KB3200970? If it is truly cumulative, then I guess I am OK yes?
I am trying to avoid any update "gaps", and I am not certain how "clever" the updates are structured. I always thought that there were "pre-requisite" strings that helped to dictate the proper install order, but as the update checker does NOT see or attempt to redo KB3197954, I am a bit concerned (as the detailed part of KB3200970 in the history page above does NOT show any fixes that are inside the KB3197954). Any advice appreciated.
Hi,
On a fresh install of AU you should have these updates in chronological order:
KB3197954 CU
KB3199986
KB3202790 FLASH
KB890830 MRT
KB3200970 CU
That's how I got them anyway.
Cheers,
If I download and install an update from windows update catalog, is it possible that windows will no longer auto update itself?
Hello, there are not many things that will prevent Windows 10 from automatically scanning for, and downloading updates IF they are applicable to your build, AND available in your geographic area. The update catalogue is sometimes used by people who see repeated failures, or errors, and possible failed downloads (maybe just putting a laptop to sleep, as often there is no indication that this is happening). You have to exercise caution, and ensure you choose the correct update for your installed OS level, and architecture (64-bit versus 32-bit, i.e. X64 update, or X86 update). TIP: always create a restore-point BEFORE manually installing ANY hot-fix or CU (Cumulative Update). Note that some large updates (CU type, or the up-coming Creators Edition update) are being rolled out in stages, so if you are expecting that, it may be a while for some areas and system types and builds. I am not yet on the CE edition (version 1703) and still at 1607, and I still do not have the latest CU downloading (KB4022723), but they are often late here in Australia.
