Hi,
In general I agree with you that the setup could be written better. It should have detected the presence of the SD-card (or whatever else it likes to write to) and invited you to remove it before you proceed.
No setup routine should ever touch anything but the partition it is supposed to install on except for user errors.
Saying this Update is utter garbage is a bit over the top however.
Cheers,

Like cereberus says, the data may still be there. Download Mini Tool Partition Wizard free and run it. It will show the drives and partitions.
Rt click the problem one and click 'Explore'. Does it throw up an explorer screen showing folders and files? I had a drive like yours a while ago and managed to use the mini tool explorer to copy data to another drive. I then reformatted the drive and copied files back.
But, if you don't have a large disk to copy files to...........
You might also see if you can give it a drive letter. It may take a drive letter but when you exit mini tool that drive letter may disappear.
It is a worry that an update can do this as 350 million computers need updating and most of these won't be owned by 'experts'.
Good luck.
